Thai hospital admits to leaving gauze inside 16 year old patient after delivering her baby

Health authorities in Surin in Thailand's north-east have finally admitted that the delivery team at a hospital left two pieces of gauze inside the birth canal of a 16 year old girl after she had a baby. 

 

The patient had been featured on a Facebook page for those seeking justice from the health authorities but at first the hospital refused to admit any mistake. 

 

The new mother was checked seven days after the delivery but nothing was found to be wrong. 

 

However, after 45 days she had severe swelling of the womb area and scarring. 

 

Two pieces of gauze were subsequently found inside her. 

 

Dr Phuwadech Surakhote of the Surin department of Public Health said Monday that he was sorry for the incident and procedures were being put in place to ensure that it did not happen again. 

 

The health authorities have been in touch with the mother to address the situation. 

 

He said that normally after a birth stitching is done and gauze is used to stem blood flow. 

 

This should have been removed but was clearly not done.

Hard to gloss over that one

Plain and simple negligence, could have been extremely serious effects on the client.

Gauze swabs used internally should be counted in and out . They should also have x-ray strip through them.

 

Does the client have the right to compensation from hospital??

Sadly I would have thought

a) only if she could afford to take the hospital to court

b) if she managed to get an 'embarrassment' of hits on social media

So there were no procedures in place prior to the incident?

did they charge her for the gauze ?

Then they'd need a calculator.

Friend had a back op where they left gauze inside which was discovered later. His insurance company told him to go to Bumrungrad to get x-ray and then removed, he settled for 2m.bt, so yes she is entitled to compensation "but".

Measures are already in place to make sure this type of incident doesn't happen... the problem is getting people to carry-out existing procedures!

And if she took them to court, they would sue her for "defamation"!!!
