Thai army to buy 37 US-made armored cars

Thai-Armed-Force.jpg

The Royal Thai Army has placed an order for thirty seven 1126 Stryker armored cars from the United States, valued at an estimated US$80 million, under the Foreign Military Sales program.

An informed army source said that the US-made armored cars are expected to be delivered this year and deployed at the 11th Light Infantry Division based in Thailand’s eastern province of Chachoengsao.

The arms deal signifies a warming of relations between the Thai army and US armament sector after the Thai army had switched to other sources, such as China and Ukraine, during the five years following the coup which toppled the government of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra in 2014.

If only they could put the utilities in good order first,so the

electricity does not go off everytime it rains or it gets a little

windy,or a constant water pressure ,these things would improve

everyone's life, but never happens, not enough commission in it.

Whom does Thailand see as its enemies ?,maybe their own

population, who one day might say enough is enough,

Whilst I understand that military forces around the world need to be in a state of readiness, I would like to point out that the Stryker is a substantial armoured vehicle designed for battlefield operations.

I am confident that this is yet another in a string of military hardware purchases that will never be used or need to be used to even a fraction of its potential. They will be left to rot along with the submarines and the aircraft carrier, the fighter jets and the tanks until there is no longer the slightest hope that they will ever be returned to anything approaching usable condition.

One would think they could come up with a way to rort the budget without so much incredible waste. Let's say half is creamed off. That's $US 40 million. Why not just take the $US 40 million and not bother with the armoured vehicles. It would save the country the other $US 40 million.

Those that sign/approve the contract no doubt will consider that they have indeed won the lottery given the proliferation of kick backs.

You don't count Thailand as one of those though - do you?

Never having fought in the "new era" can only imagine the level of competence Thailand would bring to the battlefield! There would be no battle, only annihilation, or most likely, given there past - surrender!

I thought there was a recent piece on Thai built armoured vehicles that would be rather cheaper than these US beasties.

You have no idea what you are talking about.

"Unfortunately the military may need these for South Thailand".

No, they won't. The Stryker is for battlefield conditions. It can move military personnel around under heavy fire and protect against mines/IED's. It has been used successfully in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq.

" How long will it take before ISIS fanatics yale over the local mosques in Southern Thailand??!?"

This Southern Insurgency has been off and on for over 100 years. During this time, there has never been anything approaching military equality. The insurgents have used hit and run tactics only. You have been reading too many wacko websites.

"( Look at Sri Lanka) "

Precisely look at Sri Lanka. The weapon of choice was suicide bombers. A Stryker or 37 of them plus 26 other armoured vehicles, which is the requisition, would have had no effect on suicide bombers and been no use whatsoever.

Your post is emotive nonsense.

Standard 30 % goes straight into the pockets of generals many of whom are probably going to retire.

Actual cost price will never be made public same as Yinglucks rice pledge fiasco.

Nothing changes in Thailand.

It's a relatively minor deal, as such things go. Countries buying a whole lot more don't necessarily get good PR from "western media" (as if this was a single construct). Many times, quite the opposite.

Kinda. There's a local manufacturer that's more experienced with non-armored (or lightly armored) vehicles. Lady running the show is quite a character with an interesting business bio (especially the early days). Don't know if it would come out cheaper, as some of these US arms deals can be de-facto subsidized some via aid budgets, and probably payment plan is better spread. Then there are commissions...

What they are getting now seems a bit over the top, maybe compensating for the previous Ukraine/Russian fare.

Must be the sound democratic principles they adhere to then, something gives with the western media, never giving them a hard time!

Need to up the volume to match Saudi reckon that would work!

Never is a big word. More like there are worse places in the world. And, of course, given certain local laws and sensitivities, much of the criticism published isn't on offer on local venues (such as TVF).

Hope the US institutes dual pricing and really cornholes them.

Will they come with water cannon attachment? Handy for dealing with student protests or spicing up Songkram activities.
