Clean up and carry on: Central staff told not to wait for police after "many" suicides, claims local media

The Pattaya News has voiced suspicions that staff at Central Festival Pattaya Beach are trained to quickly get rid of the mess of suicide victims rather than make any attempt to help. 

 

Staff have been told to quickly pack the corpses off to hospital, clean up and carry on, said the locally based media. 

 

It was alleged that they have undergone training not to wait for police and rescue services to arrive to start an investigation. 

 

The allegation was clear: shopping revenue was more important than unwanted investigations in front of shoppers and tourists that might affect business. 

 

 

The Pattaya News said that there had been "multiple" cases of suicide jumpers at the prominent mall located on Pattaya Beach road. 

 

They posted a video of the aftermath of the jump of a reportedly 50 year old British man.

 

Staff were seen clearing up with sweeping machines as officials pointed skywards. 

 

Shoppers were carrying on as if nothing had happened while the victim was at Pattaya Memorial Hospital. 

 

The media's suspicions were not accompanied by any comments from Central. 

 

They said that a witness on the sixth floor had run to the aid of the foreigner who had scaled a 1.5 meter high barrier. 

 

The jumper let go of the witness's hand and fell to their death by the escalator on the first floor, they said.

I learned of this news yesterday while having a meal at the very same mall. That gave me pause. But really what do people expect? To close the mall? Those cleaners are probably underpaid for cleaning up messes like that.

Maybe the mall could do more to to prevent it happening there, higher balustrades, or even full curtain walls.

 

Train staff to recognise people at risk and how to deal with them.

Wasn't it 100% clear that there was no more help to be applied?

At the beginning of the video I see them using a tent to cover the corpse.

From there they should really wait for police and "catafalque".

Cordoning off the area widely.

There are high enough (wish all condo/hotel railings were that high) and what could stop a suicidal candidate to walk outside for a jump?

High enough: read somewhere 1.50m.

Sounds plausible as I (1.72) can just look down (no urge to jump!).

If there's a will there's a way, people will find a way to off themselves no matter what you put up. These aren't children and the world isn't a kitchen to make 'child proof'. And as far as 'training' people to deal with these types, hell, they can't even deal with this in the west, the only ones who have a chance to get saved are those reluctant to perform the final dive and stall out the act.

Maybe outside around the back on the roof ?

Charge people 5000 Baht to enter , to help pay to clean the mess up ?

VT 6 next door would snaffle all the business. Much taller building and concrete impact area on all 4 sides to suit wind direction.

Reports did say 1.5m which I would have thought near impossible, but the centre management have a duty of care to all its visitors, he could have so easily landed on someone.

The centre management can not stop people committing suicide but they can make it harder to do so on their premises. (before it gets the title "Beachy Head of Asis").

As it is in all malls in Paris - France ;

Is that really the point, interfereing in police investigations is totally not appropriate and the owners / management of this mall should be told so in very clear terms. 

RIP bloke.....im happy you didn't land on someone.

May be they would be better to start installing these, so others dont get hurt ?

Get real. It was a foreigner that jumped. Even if a policeman was nearby he would have already started to write a report it was sucide before the guy hit the ground.

 

Police investigation ? blimey this is Thailand !! but in any event, even to the Thai police, not known for their intelligence, it can not take much common sense to realise why the guy jumped could it ? so therefore no investigation needed.  Just another selfish foreigner. Many tall buildings he could have jumped from without inconveniencing the public.

Well there's a nice friendly attitude. 

whatever it is, they have to wait for the police for the investigating the crime scene.

moreover, do they show utmost respect to the body of the deceased while carrying it away or just like dumping it away?

Sound policy. 

It really would be very simple to prevent jumpers without 'spoiling the look' of the mall. Add perspex barriers above the wall up to about head height.

What investigation is done by the police? Was there a doubt what happened?

I can understand them, they can't scare customers away so better to remove the body asap.  But they could prevent people from jumping, not difficult to do , 1.5 meter railing is just not high enough. 

Why does nobody suggest the easiest solution?!?
Do NOT allow farang in malls anymore, so they can't commit suicides (at least not in malls). Many farang will be happy as well, as they are not being dragged in by their 'better' half ????

AFAIK, it's not a crime in Thailand.
