"Drunk" German - with ganja in his pocket - killed in Chiang Mai motorcycle smash

Thai Rath reported that a German man on a 500 cc Honda was killed in a motorcycle smash with a pick-up in downtown Chiang Mai this morning. 

 

A witness appeared to blame the motorcyclist.

 

At 1.45 am Pol Capt Kasemsit Torkan found the Honda Rebel bike had hit a parked pick-up after it collided head on with a Toyota Hilux Revo.

 

The motorcycle rider was dead in the middle of the road. ID said that he was German national Jan Single who was aged about 30-35, said Thai Rath. 

 

He had multiple injuries. A ziplock bag of marijuana was found in a pocket of his jeans. 

 

The Revo driver Sutthawee Seasatbun, 26, stopped 100 meters from the dead body, said he was driving along Mahidol Road when the bike hit him head on. He was unable to brake in time. 

 

Capt Kasemsit said that a witness told him that he had seen the German park his bike at Seven-11 (Pa Daet branch). He looked drunk.

 

He rode out into the traffic and was hit head on as he turned. 

 

An autopsy has been ordered at Maharat Chiang Mai Hospital and relatives have been informed.

Complacency, and at 1:45am perhaps fueled by the booze, such a common killer here in Thailand. 

 

Another unnecessary loss of life on Thailands roads. 

 

Not sure how the Ganja relates unless he was also under the influence of that further exacerbating his complacency and lack of awareness of the traffic around him (witness said he pulled out into the road without looking and was hit by the vehicle).

 

Was he wearing a helmet? if he wasn't, could it have made a difference?

Cased closed. A witness said he “looked” drunk and a bag of ganja was found in his pocket. 

 

No need for toxicology tests here.

Craniocerebral injury is the major cause of death in a motorcycle accident. With multiple injuries, he could have died anyway or been severely disabled.

They wrote that the bike hit the pickup head on and as we can see from the pictures the bike is damaged mostly at the front. So it looks like the bike was going in the wrong direction.

Of course the pickup driver may have been way too fast and playing with a phone (stopped 100 meters later), but it was still the motorbike driver's own fault, drunk or not.

His ID only shows the year according to the gregorian calender, maybe the reporter doesn't know how to calculate the victims age from this, so he just guessed instead.

Why can’t be objective in reporting maybe he was drunk maybe he wasn’t ....why report he has ganja on him?

 

i see that in the reporting of the navy commander where 3 were killed in a head on, why not use adjectives like reckless driving or speeding or passing on a double solid line?

 

instead we get his association to his occupation....am I supposed to be impressed he was s military officer so to reduce his poor and ill fated driving?

Reading that report it states that the rider hit a parked pick up head-on.  Further down it say the Revo driver was hit head on but couldn't brake in time and stopped after a  100 metres.

 

Which is it ? the rider hit a parked pick-up head on or hit a moving vehicle head on ?

 

The Revo driver claimed he could not brake in time stopping 100 mters from the body. A stopping distance of 100 metres would mean the pick-ups speed on impact was around 112 KPH , well over the legal limit also.

 

It was a Capt. Kasemit who claimed he saw the rider park his bike looking drunk. Well since when would a Thai tell the truth if another Thai was party to a fatal accident ?

Mahidol Road is a dual carriageway with a concrete barrier separating west & eastbound.  If he turned right on to it, he was heading the wrong way in the oncoming fastlane!

Most of that road has a big concrete barrier between the opposite lanes.

Looks like he he hopped on the bike, then turned around to ride the wrong way down the road, then hit head on.

Riding a motorcycle at 2am drunk, no helmet, high rate of speed, so drunk he ran into a "parked" vehicle and couldn't stop in time.

 

Soooooooo, obviously the ganja killed him.

But as I said before the report is strange. The Revo driver claimed the bike hit him head-on but it took him 100 metres to stop. So a) The pick-up driver was traveling at around 112 KM b) how could the pick-up be parked as the driver say he was unable to stop in time ?

Satahip area is naval area so maybe insinuating that the person was familiar with the road conditions and local driving habits.

Of course the pickup driver may have been way too fast and playing with a phone (stopped 100 meters later), but it was still the motorbike driver's own fault, drunk or not.

May well have been going the wrong way, however my point was that the cause of death seemed to be based on purely circumstantial and subjective evidence.
