Thailand jumps 5 spots in competitiveness ranking, closes in on Malaysia

Thailand has jumped five spots in an international ranking of world competitiveness, going from 30th spot last year to 25th for 2019.
 

The International Institute for Management Development (IMD)’s 2019 World Competitiveness Ranking placed the Kingdom behind Singapore and Malaysia in the Asean region.

 

The National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) responded that Thailand could surpass Malaysia to become the region’s second most competitive economy in the next five to 10 years.

 

The government advisory body also urged continuity in government policy and education reform to ensure Thailand remained competitive in the region.

The IMD ranking is based on an evaluation of economic performance, government efficiency, business efficiency and infrastructure.

 

Thailand’s ranking in economic performance has improved from 10th to 8th, government efficiency from 22nd to 20th, and infrastructure from 48th to 45th. However, the country’s business efficiency fell from rank 25 to 27.

 

Singapore topped the regional chart and was the world No 1 for competitiveness. Malaysia ranked 22nd overall, with Thailand at 25th, Indonesia at 32nd and the Philippines at 46th.

Thailand up five places in IMD rankings

 

   

BANGKOK (NNT) - Thanks to the government’s efforts to revive the economy, invest in infrastructure projects and amend laws and regulations to adapt to the changes, Thailand has moved up five places to 25th position, the highest in 15 years, according to the International Institute for Management Development’s (IMD) latest World Competitiveness Rankings. Singapore ranked first, followed by Hong Kong and the United States.

 

The Secretary-General of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC), Thosaporn Sirisamphand, said the IMD World Competitiveness Rankings rated 63 economies worldwide, using the three criteria of economic performance, government efficiency and infrastructure.

 

The result shows that Thailand has risen from 30th position to 25th position, the highest in 15 years. Thailand performed better in economic performance, moving up two places to eighth position, thanks to an increase in foreign direct investment.

 

The country’s government efficiency has advanced to 20th position, climbing up two places due to improved business legislation. The country’s infrastructure has also improved, rising three places.

 

To meet the IMD World Competitiveness Rankings’ criteria, Mr. Thosaporn said the NESDC had cooperated with the National Statistical Office (NSO) and the Thailand Management Association (TMA) to ensure that relevant agencies’ management information systems are accurate and modern.

 

However, he said challenges that Thailand must overcome include the use of technology and innovation to add value to local products and upgrade their quality, especially for the agricultural sector and small business enterprises. In addition, workforce development has to be in line with technical advances.

 

According to the rankings, Singapore was first, up from third place last year in a straight swap with the US, while Hong Kong remained second. Switzerland ranked fourth, followed by the United Arab Emirates.

 

In the ASEAN region, Singapore claimed the top spot, followed by Malaysia and Thailand. Overall, Malaysia ranked 22nd. However, Thailand’s economic performance and government efficiency rankings were higher than Malaysia’s.

I live on the island of Tzycasrdcvcxilli and there are many inhabitants (decline to answer). 

 

We just took the Universal Standard Proficiency Test and scored 87.22.  We jumped 187 spots since the last time the test was administered.

International Institute for Management Development (IMD) is a business education school located in Lausanne, Switzerland. It is not part of a university, and only offers MBA and Executive MBA programs

There is at least one claim - by The European Observer newspaper - that the 'International Institute for Management Development' is basically fake - a degree mill. If that is true, it would perfectly and most aptly fit the fake, self-serving statistics that Thailand loves to promulgate (recent 'election' results, anyone?). Here is what is said about the 'International Institute for Management Development' (I don't know if this is true, but - I would not be surprised if there is more than a grain of truth in it!):

Nice little character assassination. The smallest research would have shown some of their alumni, such as the PM of the Netherlands, chairman and former CEO of Nestle, CEO of Moller Maersk. Why would these people require a worthless diploma?

What a fake publicity stunt ! As many who know about business and education in the country it’s near the bottom

Interestingly, Malaysia indicates four areas for reform to make doing business easier while Thailand has three areas of which two are the same as for Malaysia.

According to the data, if Malaysia can make moderate progress on its two dissimilar areas while keeping pace with Thailand on two of its similar areas, Malaysia stands to have greater potential to improve its overall ranking than does Thailand.

There are a great number of bogus universities, colleges, institute's, professional bodies etc that set up to offer worthless degrees of all levels via on-line learning usually.

 

Anyone contemplating study should check out the body very carefully.

 

Often these bogus bodies worm their way onto reviewer panels, for conference papers and publications, to try and increase their appearance of credibility. They are simply sales organizations looking to make money by whatever means. Avoid them.

in order to understand if the survey provides reliable information they should explain the criteria of the survey's evaluation.... their numbers are irrelevant, we live here and know how the country lacks efficiency

If you google IMD, the wiki site shows notable alumni, the first being Mark Rutte. He is the current PM of the Netherlands, and his google site includes education at Leiden Uni and IMD. If you check other names, Paul Bulke (chairman and ex-CEO Nestle), and Soren Skou (CEO Maersk) also show education at IMD. Notable people, with no need for fake diplomas.

While your post is accurate, it is not as far as this institute is concerned.

As for efficiency - if I want a plumber, electrician(god forbid), a pool man, a gardener I can get one to my house in under an hour - in the UK I would be waiting for weeks and then get royally shafted by the bill !! And in the U.K. the guy who comes to your house will have accredited qualifications with 3rd party liability if it goes wrong- especially important in an electrician don’t you think? How about Thailand?
