Pattaya's mayor Sonthaya Khunpluem has spoken to Manager about the flooding crisis in Pattaya.

He has said that 665 million baht from the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) budget will be used to solve the problems facing Pattaya.

Sonthaya said that the current flood prevention measures were clearly inadequate and were built just with the resort in mind. Runoff from other areas has meant that the city's systems can't cope.

He also cited land encroachment problems on six vital canals.

Money will be spent on digging a huge new reservoir and three high powered pumping stations among other measures that are vital to protect the city well known for its tourism.

Areas where particular attention will be centered are Soi Khao Talo and the Railway Road.

Are you sure 'killing' is the correct word to use, given the mayor's family and their 'alleged' mafia reputation?

Are the mic's bowing down to him or graping or whatever they call it 'ere ..

They're probably 'craping' themselves as to what might happen if they record the words 'erroneously'.

Pattaya has flooded when it rains for as long as I have been here. I have seen numerous attempts that were supposed to fix it, and of course, none ever have. While I welcome a real effort at solving the problem, I can't help but think that this will be millions more down the drain, as previous works have shown they really don't comprehend the nature of the problem.

Aside from the upcoming 665 Million, I would like to know how much they have spent over the years already.

Well I like your choice of words there!

Surely, being cynical realistic it's more than likely yet another excuse for some of it to be syphoned off by whoever's in charge this particular decade.

Pattaya, small place put drains in, build, build, build, still with small drains, concrete more and more every day, problem will only get worse, not better

665 mil is enough for the speed bumps but that only leaves 20bt for the flood defences after the usual commissions ????

No no you mean we take 665 mill and put it in our pockets and say now we have solved the problem but when flooding again you can always blame the tourists and rain like always...

nothing will change.....

The amount of money will be used to hire REAL qualified engineers ???- or someone’s relative that is clueless.??

I have seen too many Pattaya projects handed over to amateurs.  A foreign consulting firm would be the best solution.

{snipped}

The latter is usually favourable, as the first causes a loss of face, which must be avoided at all costs, even if it would address the problem.

Try bringing in Foreign Experts as they will know how to fix it without continually 'talking' about it and creaming off half the funds allocated to it !

Foreigners know nothing. No unnerstan Thai engineering, only Thai know what is needed,

Good idea, it would help to filter the "effluent" in the water and return the sea to pristine condition! ????

Key word here is in the headline--'talks'.  Always just talks--never any action.  When he talks about the inadequate efforts in the past--that's on his fellow family member who was mayor then, and did precious little.

Oh, I am sure he is very excited about the prospect of a cash injection into the city.

The design of the system should be done by a private top Environmental Engineering company, but I would not want to be the Resident Engineer on the job,

the man who is responsible for ensuring that installation is carried out as per design ????

Have to pay off those bad family debts somehow.

How many millions have you already "buried" in these sewers? Or rather, in your pocket?

Consequently, he most likely has a cousin or uncle in the sand business who wants to serve his community.
