Fire at Laem Chabang raises questions about the EEC

The recent fire on a container ship at Laem Chabang Port has raised concerns over the environmental impact of the Laem Chabang Phase 3 expansion, which is designed to link with the Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) mega project.

“The current environmental problem has not been effectively addressed, and now the government embarks on a new project,” said Thanaporn Vichan, a member of Thai Labour Solidarity Committee.

People in the EEC area are urging the government to consider their well-being, as well as the environmental impact of industrialization, she said. During the morning of May 25th, a fire broke out on the Korean-registered vessel KMTC Hongkong, which took 18 hours to extinguish. Many people were injured, mainly suffering eye, throat and skin irritation.

Prayut considered it, then invoked Article 44 to bypass all those 'pesky' environmental and social issues in order to expedite the project When the water supply in the area gets 'sucked' by the EEC and farms go dry, the People's concerns will become irrelevant.

It's all about revenue.... safety is way down the list!

Environmental concerns? From the army? That would demonstrate not only diligence, vision, and competence, but also concern for the citizens. Not going to happen under this hapless administration.

Five more years of leading the nation backwards.

Yea just like how the previous "democratic" governments did so much to stop the burning in the north ? Just as much as the army.

Money talks B.S. walks in Thailand army or no army.

Anything is better than nothing. With the army what the people are assured of is nothing.

That is the point, the democratic governments did as much as the army to stop the burning..  nothing. So i dont see the difference.

There is no EEC and probably never will be. As I understand it was only ever a dream by Thaksin Shinawatra which was stolen by Prayut Chan o cha who then claimed the idea as his own.

If it was ever to have some hope this sham of an election manipulated by Prayut may have just put the kiss of death on it. Most ethical foreign investors try to avoid corrupt military "democratic" governments.

It is a very simple point. A democratic (by which I mean elected) government is more likely to listen to the peoples concerns.

Now this is the really clever bit - if they don't listen, then they might not get elected again! Fiendishly, diabolically clever concept.

And the army, well traverse right, a quick burst over their heads with the coaxial machine gun and look, the people's concerns have gone, and any left are waiiing desperately from the prone position. So much more practical don't you think?

What has burning in the North got to do with a container ship fire in Laem Chabang?

Just more whataboutery to justify your earlier support of the junta.

No support for the junta.. just no support for the inactive democratic governments too. How long has the burning been going on ? Has anyone done anything ? Huge pollution and now people moan about pollution here and blame the junta while all those idiots in charge never ever care about pollution.

I would say that the army SHOULD have had a better chance to reign in those farmers burning. Because they would not have to worry about getting re elected. Unfortunately this year they had to worry about it.. result more burning as ever and almost nothing done. Nobody wants to offend the big voting block that the farmers represent.

Democracy is the best system, however when a large voting block like farmers get protected it shows the downsides of a Democracy. I had hoped that the army would only stay a short time and would have made those impopular decisions of going after farmers stopping them burning and doing something about all the pesticides. Unfortunately they did not as they wanted to stay in power.

I find it a big shame how worried the army and the democratic governments are to offend the farmers and by doing so let them get away with murder (figuratively). Pesticides checks...  nah....  burning... lots of talk... action... what is that action.

Same now here with laem chabang.. money first people later. I don't see a difference between army and democratic governments when its about making hard decisions.. they all ignore them.
