Biometric bust! Ivory Coast nationals nabbed at airport using fake Mauritius passports

Thai media hailed a bust at Suvanabhumi airport using the soon to be universally installed biometric technology.

An airline desk contacted immigration after irregularities appeared in the passports of two people claiming to be from Mauritius on their way to Frankfurt, Germany to work.

The couple were taken away and their passports were examined further using biometric technology and were found to be fake.

Mr Akouani Attegbe Vivien Boris, 21, and Miss Fofana Aicha, 22, admitted they were from the Ivory Coast.

They were using Mauritius passports they had bought from an Ivory Coast man for 200 Euros each (about 7,000 baht).

Naew Na did not say where they acquired the fakes but they said that Mauritius passport holders did not need a visa for Germany.

Immigration chief Lt-Gen Sompong Chingduang hailed the cooperation between his men and other stakeholders at the airport such as the AOT, AOC and customs.

Regular monthly meetings are helping with this as well as a project entitled "Immigration Home Team".

Biometric equipment is set to become in widespread use at Thai airports, land borders and immigration offices from next month.

As an aside, Thaivisa notes that the word "stakeholder" was spelled "steakholder" in English in the Naew Na story. Clearly immigration with the help of biometrics are beefing up their operations at the airport.

They should have used their original passports, and just thrown them away before entering Frankfurt Immigration....

They probably would not have been allowed on the flight without a valid visa for Germany on their Ivory Coast passports.
