Gen Prawit welcomes Russian Ambassador to Thailand

BANGKOK, 15 June 2019(NNT) - Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense, has welcomed Mr. Evgeny Tomikhin, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Thailand, on the occasion of his taking office, at the Ministry of Defense.

 

Defense Ministry Spokesman Lieutenant General Khongcheep Tantravanich disclosed today that the two sides discussed various issues and expressed appreciation of the relationship between Thailand and Russia. Over the past four years, the relationship has been more dynamic. Both have exchanged visits on many levels and there have been continuous high level meetings resulting in an expansion of trade between the two countries of 18 percent in 2018. Thailand and Russia will jointly steer their mutual trade to rise to 10 billion US dollars in 2020.

 

Gen. Prawit mentioned cooperation on promoting and developing the results of the discussions between the Prime Minister and the President of Russia. He has invited Russia to invest in the Eastern Economic Corridor and proposed the establishment of a Russian language center in Thailand to expand and develop mutual cooperation in education and related activities. As for security and military cooperation, Thailand is keen to increase cooperation with Russia to preserve peace in the region.

 

The Russian Ambassador to Thailand reiterated that Russia is willing and ready to strengthen cooperation with Thailand in all respects, including culture, trade, and investment in the EEC, as well as in security and military matters, but especially the establishment of a Russian language center which would be mutually beneficial. In addition, Russia is also willing to support Thailand as this year’s ASEAN Chair. The Russian Defense Minister plans to visit Thailand officially at the end of this year.

You have to love this.  Another reference to China's BRI and the ever distancing of the USA from Thailand.   At the same time,  another news item on the ever increasing tariff wars.  All these geopolitical shifting sands as I wait to hear if I'll be returning to Vietnam for a year of work (living there,  not Thailand again) and seeing a very different world emerging.   Interesting.

Sounds like a bidding war will be starting between China and Russia for who will control Thailand's political leadership. You know there will be commitments for individual compensation for favorable deals made at these meetings.
