Senate speaker says MPs have no right to examine senatorial selection process

Senate speaker Pornpetch Wikchitcholchai has rejected the seven-party opposition bloc’s demand for the House of Representatives to examine the selection process of 250 senators, on the grounds that the House has no right to do so.

Instead, he suggested that the Pheu Thai-led Opposition raise the issue with the Constitutional Court which, he said, is the right body to rule on the matter.

In the motion, submitted to House of Representatives, the opposition questioned the legitimacy of the 250 senators and sought a debate on the issue of regulations regarding the selection of the senators, the selection process, conflicts of interest and the 1.3 billion baht spent.

What are they afraid of....somethings to hide....????

Here we go again: they just reject any valid criticism and push it away from them onto others in a different branch of the power-elite; then those others will come out with some ludicrous ruling, saying that the criticism was wholly unfounded and that no law has been broken.

Simple as that.

If I were one of them, I could easily make up any justification for anything vicious, nefarious and unjust whatsoever. I could simply say: 'You have misunderstood the law and the Constitution. You are spreading false news and causing confusion amongst the Thai people. And there's an end of the matter.'

When you are untouchable (and we all know why) - it is so, so easy to ride roughshod over everybody else.

Might is right, don't you know??!! A marvellous moral maxim with which to inspire and edify young, idealistic Thais, instilling in them decency, ethics and morality! Yes: cheating, stealing, lying and exercising unopposed MIGHT are the very foundations and crowning glory of all Buddhist ethics. Everyone knows that!

We seem to have had an election in Thailand and nothing has changed, it certainly isn't democracy

Someone is afraid of something then eh? They seem to make the rules up as they go along.

Rule #1 ; Rules are subject to change at our whim!

The senate speaker is wrong. Parliament has oversight responsibilities of the senate house. But this is Thailand where the mighty make the rules and they are in charge.

No, they no have right to do anything. They are just there to fill out the empty seats.

Be interested to see their reaction if/when someone proposes an elected senate. Of course it would require a new constitution to be approved by the populace.

Trump, Big P and Boris are 1 slappers... That is a double slapable face ????

The shape of things to come, a speaker aligned with the Junta will not allow fair debate.

I guess I don't understand Thai democracy.

Oh? So a democratically elected member of the lower house has no right to question the selection process of the senate? Surely it is within the power and responsibility of the lower house to amend the constitution and change this shameful charade.

in any normal democratic or similar system, yes - but this is Thailand - you know the hub of everything including make your own rules to suit the current situation / difficult  request or demand from anyone other than us ( the god given elected , honest and hard working (non elected) members.)

Starting to smell like the Senate is defecating to make it a house of crap.

Sure he would do that. He is after all the EX-NLA president and takes pride that he was on top of passing over 500 laws under his command. Just who does everyone think elected and  nominated him to be speaker? As disgusting as yellow snow

People in power do as they please. Elections are only a ruse. EU run by unelected officials ensconced in Brussels. Concentration camps and prisons for profits run in America by the powerful. Nothing to see here too.

If one thing is certain, Thailand is not a democracy. If they are, it is a SE Asian style strongman democracy. Until demonstrated otherwise. Let us hope these guys keep fighting the cronies, the stooges, and the chief incompetent, Prayuth.

I think the good senator needs to hold his tongue. Has no-one told him Gen Prayut is soon to be an MP. How dare he tell Gen Prayut what he can or cannot do! Truly disgusting.

For my children's and other young Thai futures and what they believe which is totally against the regime and elite- I hope so too!

Ha  DEMOCRACY In ACTION!!

And we all know what the outcome of that would be.

Speaker is SUPPOSED to be neutral

Is EU a democracy? They are run by unelected bureaucrats in Brussels. Is US a democracy? The current incumbent lost the election by 3MM votes.

  • Popular Post

Just looking at this Speaker's face fills me with confidence in the goodness of his character: doesn't he look so morally clean, pure, benevolent, ethical, upright, filled with honesty and integrity?

I am sure you will agree!
