A stateless high-school girl, from Thailand’s southern province of Ranong, has won a consolation award from the Genius Olympiad program held recently in the United States.

Ms. Yonladee “Ploy” Phiyatat, a Mathayom 5 student at Satri Ranong School, told Thai PBS that she has received a certificate approving her consolation prize in the field of scientific technology from the Genius Olympiad program, in which representatives from 79 countries and 43 states in the US compete.

She admitted that the competition was tough and she was afraid that she might disappoint many of her supporters, but promised to do better the next time.

Mrs. Monrat Ammorndara, a teacher at her school, who is also the girl’s step mother, said that, although the prize was not a big one, it was important for the development of learning and teamwork.

She thanked all concerned who made it possible for Nong Ploy to realize her dream to compete in the Genius Olympiad.

No, she is no longer stateless. False and misleading headline, due to that she was granted citizenship before travelling to the olympiad.
