Brake Failure on a field trip: Dozens of young students end up in ravine in Kanchanaburi

Dozens of students, parents and teachers on a field trip to the Sai Yok area of Kanchanaburi in Thailand's west hurtled down a ravine after their bus experience a braking problem.

Police at the scene found a crushed motorcycle in the road, four poles snapped and the bus in the ravine.

The vehicle was part of a convoy of six vehicles taking primary students from the Wat Phokharam school in U-Thong district of Suphanburi to the scenic Sai Yok area.

Driver of the third vehicle in the convoy, 67 year old Withoon Padungrotwit said he was slowly going down the hill when there was a toppled motorcycle in his way.

He said he slowed further but there was a problem with his brakes. He ordered his helper to put chocks made from logs under the wheels but this did no good.

The bus went over the chocks, flattened the motorcycle then plunged through the poles and down into the ravine ending up next to a drainage ditch.

Thirty two students, parent and teachers were injured but only one, a female teacher who was sitting at the front was kept in hospital after being transferred from Sai Yoke hospital that is just 500 meters from the crash site.

Somchai takes his bus to the mechanic and says,  "The brakes don't work.   Can you fix the horn?"

Simple problem, his Chocks were too small.........

Yet another case of a vehicle not fit for purpose being used to transport children, parents and teachers on 'field trips', where the vehicle ends up in fields or forests itself !     One must also question why a 67 year old man is driving the bus when the 'retirement' age in Thailand is 60 ?   Does nobody in this country in a position of authority ever do their job properly where safety is concerned; even the school teachers who could have a good look around vehicle's before deciding they are good enough to carry the kids they are supposed to be 'responsible' for ?

Seems to be a problem on the reporters keyboard.

It always auto corrects 'brain-failure' to 'brake failure'.

I didn't know Somchai was British! He'd  need to be, to be that thick

World Class Thailand  - Strikes again...!!!

Bus too old and poorly maintained, driver too old, how do you entrust to a transport company that offers this passenger service?
Irresponsible, stop these attempted murders!

Again, fast and furious strikes again again again.

How old is that POS...the bus, not the driver.

No idea why driver is to old ?   One Company I worked for the owner used to always be taking children, parents and teachers on 'field trips'  a few times a month, he was 84..

Vehicles have two basic functions: go and stop. The go part is MUCH more intricate than the stop part, yet they seem to fail the stop function MUCH more frequently. Should someone point this out to their service mechanics (silly and pointless question, of course)?

It says the chocks he put under the wheels were made from logs. Does that mean they were round?

No ! His brain power was too small.

These bus drivers need amulets of the patron saint of brake systems St Brembo to ward off the evil brake failure thing ..

I think some credit must be due to the "helper" who was "ordered" to jump from a moving bus to try and stop the moving wheels with logs!

Only in Thailand.

I suspect if the bus was carrying logs to use as chocks,

that the driver already knew the brakes were shit.

regards worgeordie

Nobody killed ? Thank the gods  not the incompetent people neglecting their duty to maintain a public bus !!! Disgrace and shame to the Kingdom

hope you no hopers in the giver are reading these feeds!!!

Looking at i would conservatively bet the bus is 40 years old maybe older, this combined with a nearly 70 year old driver... amazing!

I know i'm getting old and dense, but that article didn't even make sense to me.

No surprise.

There are many more  unmaintained or poorly maintained vechicles with irratic or unfit drivers of such vehicles on the most dangerous roads in the world, namely Thai roads.

Paradise.

Why check them? They've been ok for the past 15 years.

Even if everyone died, nothing would be done~it never is

Maybe the brake mechanic title should be removed from banned work for foreigner's ,as obviously the work is not being carried out, possibly another job the locals wont do ,

Well you wanted a field trip here it is ????

???????????? life imitates art
