Hi all,

Has anyone had an aftermarket turbo fitted to their car/pick-up and can recommend a good shop to do this?

My Thai friends have mentioned 2-3 shops but the feedback about the standards has been mixed.Either the preparation of the engine has been bodged or the plumbing for the turbo is cheap and nasty.

I need a turbo for a B16A Honda type R engine 1998.

Any info appreciated:)

Thanks.

Please post other mods for the engine. What changes have you installed for the internals and what supporting mods do you have on your vehicle? What are you your horsepowergoals/ driving goals?

Midnight,

Internals are stock.Modifications are AEM fuel rail,HKS induction system,Hondata ECU and Spoon N1 exhaust.

Ive looked into adding a turbo before and it seems nobody strengthens the internals on a Honda engine because they are able to handle a low-mid boost set turbo without problems.Currently the car has 195bhp after testing on the dyno and my goal is 250bhp with some other mods in the future.

Any advice?

Thanks.

This may be true for a new engine but if it some years under its belt, its usually a good idea to replace the pistons, conrods, big & little end bearings & check the crankshaft.

You may consider a wastegate on your turbo to limit boost if you still wish to use the old engine.

If you are in Bangna area, head over to HKS BKK..they can set you up with as much power as you want, as long as your pockets are deep. They did a nice upgrade to one of my Evo IV.

If you are looking for a budget shop send me an email and i can put you in touch with all of the guys you need to make you go as fast as you can afford. Speed costs money.. but Hondas are not that expensive to do properly.

It can get very expensive if you do it wrong...blown engines and all...

to be honest, i've heard some real horror stories about some of the work done here. I'd make sure you do your research big time before making the move.... I'm adding a supercharger to my car, but am actually going to have one of my friends over stateside come out and install it. i don't have a mechanic i can trust here yet

I consulted my brother, a well respected tuner in the states to double check my gut feeling. You are going to get yourself into a grey area. I agree that the engine is pretty stout but you also must think about the (high) compression factor. Consider if you will be satisfied with 250 if you do attain it. If you are ok with it (you are pushing the limits without changing out internals) then you must be very very confident about the work of your tuner. Thailand heat - high compression - less than ideal tune => knock. If you are not familiar with the concept then you should find out about it before you even consider touching a turbo. Then when you do your bit of night racing, you'll get to see what your rod & or piston looks like along with a hole on the side of the engine. Again, the quality of tuner is essential. Get referrences on their work.

But if there is any chance that you will want more down the road, and what car guy is ever satisfied, you best go ahead and bite the bullet and build the internals. You will have a more durable engine with 300+ (there are whole bunch of my buddies with more than double that in their hondas)then you would have with the stock internals. Margin of safety = Peace of mind.

Good luck whichever direction you choose. Just be careful with the trial and error / shortcut mentality here.

Midnight,

Thanks for the info.

Yep,my biggest worry is the shortcut mentality,Ive seen it even in the shops that have a so-called good rep.Ive had turbo cars in the past including a 2 litre turbo VW beetle and Porsche 944.The problem here is actually buying the beefed up internals in the first place.

I'm probably gonna go for the Greddy system as its available as a complete kit for the B16A,only problem it will need to be bought overseas:(

The tuning magazines are ok here and I do buy them regularly but again,no recommendations to which shop is best.

Thanks again.
