webfact Posted July 22, 2019 Share Posted July 22, 2019 Chiang Mai tells farmers to delay planting rice, raising fish By The Nation The Chiang Mai provincial administration is looking into the possibilities of digging well to cope with future water shortages and will also seek cooperation from farmers to delay planting rice and raising fish in rivers when the water level is low, the deputy governor said Monday. Komsan Suwanampha said the provincial administration was contemplating digging underground wells in the southern part of the province, which is outside existing irrigation projects, to prevent water shortages in the future. Farmers will be encouraged to form groups to dig underground wells so that they would have enough water for farming in the future. Komsan said the provincial administration is confident that the remaining water would be enough for consumption at rate of about 1 million cubic metres per month. But water from reservoirs in the northern province cannot be released for irrigation purpose so farmers should refrain from planting rice for now and villagers who raise fish in cages on rivers should stop after harvesting, Komsan said. He said the provincial administration will try its best to help rice farmers who planted their crops earlier as well as longan orchard owners but farmers who plant new crops after the warning the warning will not get compensation. Komsan said officials will also relocate water pumps in southern districts, such as Chom Thong, from downstream to upstream of reservoirs so that the pumps could draw water to alleviate the water shortage. The Chiang Mai Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office will also set up drought alleviation operation centres in all districts. Are they really serious with this statement....!!!! Seems pretty obvious to me. If the water levels low, and you 'raise' the fish, they'll die as soon as they're higher than the water. Had a nice setup. The photo is of the backyard and a very full pond that was feed by rain or our well. To the left of the photos rice paddies that were irrigated from the Mae Kuang Dam. This area gets two and sometimes 3 crops a year. Twice in a 7 year period as I recall water was not released for rice. Directly next to our house on the paddy side the farmers had bored a 4 inch well. Water table was only about 4 meter down in that area. Farmers needed water and they had a gentleman with a trailer/generator and a deep well submersible pump. He would set up on our soi directly in front of us. That generator would run 3 days at 24 hours straight. That one bore took care of about 20 rai. There were other bores in the area. Probably he is referring to the fact that here in Chiang Mai they planted rice about a month ago everywhere. But once again wait until the s h i t hits the fan, then issue knee-jerk reactionary attempted face-saving rescue plan which may or may not ever be made into reality. Meanwhile poor farmers continue to be screwed by pathetically failed water management bureaucrats. Not long since they were gratuitously and ineffectively spraying (wasting) large volumes of water in the air to knock down the equally inexcusable air pollution.
