A report by the Cambodian Mine Action Authority published yesterday recorded a 100 percent increase in landmine casualties in the first six months of the year when compared to the same period last year. According to the report, there were 62 landmine or unexploded ordnance (UXO) casualties between January and June this year, up from 31 casualties reported in the same period last year.

“Eleven people, or 18 percent, were killed, up from seven deaths over the same period last year,” the report said. “Thirty-nine people, or 63 percent, were injured and another 12 people, or 19 percent, were amputated, while in the same period last year, there were 17 people, or 54 percent, who were injured and seven people, or 23 percent, who were amputated.”

The CMAA report further noted that from the 62 victims this year, 46 were UXO casualties and 16 were landmine casualties.
