"Don't take my mum away - who's gonna look after me?", five year old appeals for shoplifting parent

A five year old girl begged the police in Samrong, south east of Bangkok, not to take her mother into custody after they went on a shoplifting trip. 

 

The mother, aged 35 from Sisaket, was stopped by security at Imperial World department store. 

 

She had baby milk formula, school shoes and other items worth a total of 8,000 baht. 

 

She told Samrong Neua police that she had four children aged 12,7, 5 and just over a year. 

 

The baby needed milk but she had no money. The shoes were for her five year old as her pair were broken.

 

Her husband had lost his job as a security guard at Suvarnabhumi airport and selling moo ping and chicken on a stick was not enough to keep the family alive. 

 

The police arranged for the little girl to be taken away by the sister of the husband.

 

She said: "Don't arrest my mummy - who is going to look after me?"

 

The shoplifter was charged with theft during the hours of darkness and detained.

Someone stole and you are upset with them for pressing charges?

If we don't enforce laws people will just disregard them.

It would be nice of them to give it away for her children right? But then every thief has a story as to why they steal, should we just hand out merchandise to everyone who says they need some?

And also at the same time people comment about others feeding soi dogs! At least those feeding soi dogs are actually doing something to help instead of just being a keyboard warrior.

To the "hang her high" brigade.

Not exactly high heeled shoes, brand name shirt and handbag is it.

For a lot of families, the school uniform malarkey is an expensive annual spend.

As for the "hand me down" brigade - no - how do you hand down shirts that have to have a name embroidered in them?

I hope she is not prosecuted and sorts her life out.

Long ago I managed a record store in London, and my security staff (a posh name for a middle-aged lady with a shopping basket) caught someone stealing something. I had him in the office and it turned out he was the manager of a foreign bank in the city. I pondered a while and made him sweat, but decided that calling the police and prosecuting him would be far too great a punishment for someone who could lose his job. I'm sure he was scared enough of the possible consequences that he didn't do it again.
Imperial World should have done the same.

Stealing for her kids, I guess you cannot champion this too much it could send out the wrong signals but if her aim was to feed and clothe her children. I have nothing but admiration for her actions. Hoping it prompts those around her to help her out a bit.

Emotionally heartbreaking I think for many... to that end I agree... but... I also acknowledge that there was (apparently based on the reporting) an alleged crime committed as well..

So, I do think it’s right for the legal process to get underway... Yes, I am sure (but can’t prove) that there have been some who have “done” worse and escaped any legal actions- but that in and of itself does not (in my opinion) then say this alleged offender gets a “pass” on this alleged act. I don’t think Imperial World (or any business) need apologize for taking action against those who criminally steal from them.

About the alleged offenders “situation” with the kids, income situation etc.... THAT to me is where the court, judge and judicial process takes over .. I think this their “call” how this alleged offender is punished if found guilty or admits to guilt. I would hope and expect that the court fairly and properly balance all the mitigating factors as well as law.

I can understand that the store can't let people steal from them and go unpunished. Deterrents must be imposed, but I hope those administering any punishment will strongly consider that she was obviously desperate and taking the things to provide for her children. 

 

As for the extra weight a night time crime carries, that shouldn't even be brought into the picture. Obviously, in a store, it make no difference what time of day it is. It's not like she was prowling around on somebody's property.

I agree about the night time issue... I think IF the fact that it was night in any way facilitated or impacted the crime - like improving the odds of evading detection or apprehension due to darkness- THEN i think there’s merit to an additional charge.... but if the fact it was night had ZERO impact on the crime, then I think the charge really should not apply.

I see folks  complaining  here about "nanny states" and the like all the time. Hey, a little help vis a vis "unemployment benefit" might be a helpful, humane alternative.

Maybe all the temple donations could be used in part to help a mom with hungry kids. I think "merit" could be a two way street. A little less gold leaf and a little more of Buddha's compassion.

But hey, I know. These are "socialist" ideas, no matter what Buddha and Jesus said.

  There are no jobs in Sisaket. No factory , no social welfare, no nothing. There are already way too many jobless people who try their luck in the capital city and fail. 

 

   Isn't her problem part of the government that doesn't care about its people?

 

I bet that both parents are not even educated on how to prevent pregnancies and she's a good example about all the liars who make it look like Thailand doesn't have many unemployed citizens.  

 

   What did the Junta government do for the people in the last five years? Poor people got poorer and the army personal got richer.

 

Didn't they get richer and richer and nobody's pointing a finger at Prawit & Co who seem to have a lot of dead bodies under their bed.

In my book, this isn’t stealing. It’s a mother desperately trying to feed and clothe her kids in a society with possibly the worst wealth gap (2018) in the world.

Though I adamantly disagree with stealing, I have to say that this woman only stole things that her children needed. She didn't steal alcohol or cigarettes or anything for herself, she's simply tried to take care of the needs of her children. In this circumstance I really believe that the government should be lenient toward her. Now this poor woman will be punished for doing what we are supposed to do as parents, take care of the needs of our children.

I see this has stirred up a raft of abuse for the poor and unfortunate and I'm wondering what solutions op's would offer if they were in a similar situation given that government help amounts to 300bpm unemployed 800bpm for disabled 800bpm pensioners. I do a bit with the poor here wont say to much but the withering poverty some have to endure is sick beyond belief whilst generals adorn themselves in trinkets LOS or land of shit ????

Sad. What confuses me most is that those people with least chances on proper life often manage to get 3-4 kids... Not the brightest idea.
