Heavy bag caused spinal twisting

A mother of a secondary school student in Khon Kaen has blamed her daughter's heavy school bag for twisting her spine.

Suphap, 40, who is living in Chumphae, took her daughter to Khon Kaen on Saturday. She complained of a cough and fever and so she took "Toni" to a hospital.

X-rays showed nothing untoward with Toni's lungs - it was just a regular infection of the trachea.

But doctors discovered a bent spine in the 14 year old M3 student.

She will see bone disorder specialists this Saturday.

Suphap blamed her daughter's heavy school bag saying carrying it from class to class has caused this. Toni had complained of aches and pains since M1 (the first year of secondary).

She often had to give her daughter a back and shoulder massage to alleviate symptoms.

She has been to see the school director to ask that her daughter be allowed to use a wheelie bag to cart her books around as further use of a backpack may exacerbate her condition.

"Scoliosis is a sideways curvature of the spine that occurs most often during the growth spurt just before puberty. While scoliosis can be caused by conditions such as cerebral palsy and muscular dystrophy, the cause of most scoliosis is unknown"

Yes it is the very same nonsense in my son's school. Carrying the bag is a real workout. Why they can't have lockers or any place to keep at least the heavy books overnight? Just today I saw another boy from a higher grade, who besides carrying the standard school bag (that was obviously stuffed with books) was also carrying an additional cotton bag that was also filled with books. Luckily we living right next to the school, otherwise I would complain daily about it (not expecting that they would actually change anything in this lifetime though.....)

My 9 year old niece goes to Private  School in Rayong and my wife and I have  homes in Bangkok and Pattaya but we go down to take care of her when her  mom goes overseas for her company or travels to other areas of Thailand. Her bag has wheels but when  I decided  to carry it I was very glad the car was not parked any further away. Insane to give that many books and weight for a kid to carry.
