The General Department of Customs and Excise yesterday ordered Chungyuen Plastic Manufacturers to return 83 containers filled with rubbish back to their origins and fined it more than $250,000. On July 20, Chungyuen Plastic was identified as the company that was responsible for the import of the 83 containers, which were found by Sihanoukville Autonomous Port authorities earlier that week.

The containers contained 1,600 tonnes of plastic rubbish and officials said the containers came from the United States and Canada. In a statement yesterday, the GDCE and the Environment Ministry said Chungyuen Plastic, a local company, must return the containers before August 24 or the company will be sanctioned.

“If the company does not implement the [order], the General Department of Customs and Excise will take legal action,” GDCE said.

GDCE director-general Kun Nhim at a press conference yesterday identified the company’s board of directors chairman as Suon Lok.
