Helmet use: Bangkok leads the way showing the countryside how it's done

Daily News reported that motorcyclists in Bangkok were a model for how the rest of the country might behave.

In statistics produced in a survey by Road Safety Watch it has been shown that 85% of riders in the capital wear helmets - much more than anywhere else in Thailand.

And their reward?

Bangkok has one of the lowest fatality rates from road accidents in Thailand compared to all provinces. The city usually features in the top two or three "provinces" with fewest fatalities.

Daily News said that campaigns to promote 100% helmet use were effective in the city.

The same could not be said "up country" where only half wear helmets.

In another damning statistic it has been revealed that only 8% of children riding as passengers on motorcycles in Thailand are given helmets to wear.

Some 70% of road fatalities per year - the annual total being estimated at about 25,000 - involve motorcycles.

As a cause of death among children it is now rivaling drowning.

BS.  on busy bkk backstreets i see very for helmets worn.

data likely from main roads where they use helmets only to avoid police cash extraction.

yes  those  2oo  baht  helmets  sure  will  save your  life, especially  when  the  straps  not  done  up  either.

Neither will this kind of logic save the geniuses who bought full face helmets, only to wear them on the tops of their heads like baseball caps.  Great way to raise the center of gravity as well.

Seriously though, how about some model behavior by enforcing penalties on the 80% of car drivers that automatically whip out their phones upon braking.  Not saying that's an easy task at all, but something's got to be done with this gridlock that has only gotten worse with the increase in vehicles and duh-what reaction time caused by smart phones.

But one of the highest fatality rates for people being killed on sidewalks by motorcyclists.

Maybe there are fewer deaths in BKK because everyone is stuck in the traffic?
