Chanthaburi: Monk Killed, Two Injured in Collision With Car on Sukhumvit Road
In an early morning incident, a car struck a group of monks as they walk along the road, near Wat Hong Kuha in Khlong Narai Subdistrict on Sukhumvit Road, Chanthaburi. One monk was fatally injured, while two others sustained moderate injuries. The incident occurred around 07:40 as the monks were walking along the roadside in a single line. A silver Isuzu SUV, driven by a father hurriedly taking his daughter to school, reportedly lost control and collided with the monks. Sawang Katanyu Rescue Service responded to the scene and found one monk critically injured, later identified as 26-year-old Phra Panat, who succumbed to his injuries after resuscitation attempts. The injured monks were identified as Phra Khru Prachot Rattanasunthorn, the abbot of Wat Khok Yang in Buriram and district chief monk, and Luang Ta Chan, a resident monk. Both were treated on-site by rescue teams and subsequently transported to Phra Pokklao Hospital. The driver, in a state of shock, immediately approached the monks to apologise. The car involved was found parked about 30 metres from the site, with front-end damage. Eyewitnesses, including a nearby food vendor, described seeing the monks pass before hearing the loud impact of the collision. The monks were reportedly part of a larger group of 14 from Wat Khok Yang, on pilgrimage from Buriram to Chanthaburi, staying overnight at Wat Khom Bang. The monks remaining uninjured were visibly shaken and later taken back to the temple. Ultra-Conservatives Urge Thai Govt to Abandon Thai-Cambodia MoU

The agreement, which deals with profit-sharing in undersea resource development, has become a contentious issue, with up to 100,000 citizens encouraged to sign a petition against it. Warong Dechgitvigrom, the Thai Pakdee party chair, announced the push for signatures both online and through direct engagement with communities. The campaign targets an agreement brokered two decades ago between former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra and Cambodia's then-leader Hun Sen - a deal that remains unresolved under the shadow of overlapping territorial claims. Warong’s latest efforts took him to Koh Kood island, a small community in Trat province, to garner local support. The island itself is a tiny fraction of Trat's approximate 227,000 residents, with just 1% living on Koh Kood. Still, Warong argues that the MoU threatens Thailand’s maritime sovereignty, potentially ceding parts of its continental shelf to Cambodia due to overlapping claims. At the heart of Warong’s demands is a call for the Thai government, led by Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra, daughter of Thaksin Shinawatra, to insist on Cambodia's ratification of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) from 1982. This international statute outlines nations' rights and responsibilities concerning marine territorial claims and exploitation. Warong believes that without Cambodia’s adherence to UNCLOS, Thailand risks losing control over valuable maritime zones. He insists that no further negotiations on the profiteering of undersea natural resources should proceed without first addressing these territorial ambiguities. Collision in Phang Nga: Trailer Truck Engulfed in Flames After Crashing into Bus
In a crash on the Petchkasem Road near Phang Nga, a trailer truck collided with a bus, sparking an intense fire that claimed the life of the truck driver. His partner managed to escape just moments before the flames consumed the vehicle. The incident occurred on November 9 at approximately 22:25. Police Lieutenant Weerapat Khaekmuang from the Takua Thung Police Station responded to reports of a collision on the inbound lane to Phuket, near the U-turn by Saeng Tawan Safari in Tha Yu Subdistrict, Takua Thung District, Phang Nga. Upon arrival, authorities found the trailer truck, bearing registration from Surat Thani, completely engulfed in flames. The rear trailer, was also heavily damaged. The bus, with license from Phang Nga, sustained rear-end damage from the impact. The driver of the truck, Mr. Peerawat, age 27, was tragically killed at the scene. Initial investigations revealed that Mr. Peerawat had been transporting rubber sheets from Nakhon Si Thammarat to the Ao Makham Port in Phuket. He was accompanied by his girlfriend, Ms. Kusuma, who was seated in the cab. As the truck neared the U-turn, it crashed into the back of a bus waiting to make a turn, causing a fire that rapidly engulfed the truck and trailer. Ms. Kusuma managed to escape in time, but Mr. Peerawat was trapped inside the vehicle and unable to get out. Firefighters extinguished the flames and recover his charred remains. His body was sent to Phang Nga Hospital for further examination. Both vehicles were towed to Takua Thung Police Station, where authorities are investigating the exact cause of the incident.
