VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis is expected to make an official trip to Thailand in November ahead of an already announced visit to Japan, becoming the first pontiff in nearly four decades to go to either country, Vatican sources say.

The three sources said the trip would be announced soon.

The late Pope John Paul visited Japan in 1981 and Thailand in 1984.

Francis' trip to Japan, which he announced himself in January, will take him to Tokyo as well as the two cities hit by U.S. atomic bombs at the end of World War Two - Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

The trip to the two countries where Catholics are a tiny minority accounting for less than half of one percent of the population, is expected to last about seven days and start around Nov. 20.

Thailand is predominantly Buddhist and Japan is mostly Buddhist and Shinto.

The trip is part of Francis' push to increase dialogue with other religions in order to promote world peace.

The stop in Thailand will coincide with the 350th anniversary of the founding of the "Mission de Siam" by Pope Clement IX to oversee missions in Siam, the former name of Thailand.

Bet he goes over to Santa Cruz over near Wat Prayun. There is a mosque over there too and Wat Arun is only about a klick away up the road. Totally cooler.

Oh man, if he would visit Ubon (very large population of Vietnamese-descended Catholics), my girlfriend's mother (mid-80s, and getting on...) would be able to die a very happy woman.

I always considered Vietnamese and Filipinos to be very serious Catholics.

Definitely. In the case of my GF's family, the Catholic part comes from her great-grandfather, an undocumented immigrant from Vietnam. The family lost the Vietnamese language a long time ago, but held on quite strongly to the religion.

Waste of time and money.

make sure they complete a TM30 for him wherever he planning to stay.  Don't want him being throw out of the country for national security reasons.

"No. If you no hab twenty thousan', cannot. You go home now!"

Exciting that he will get to meet the world's only other infallible leader.

I wonder will he be bringing the Popemobile with him. Knowing Thailand's road safety record it might be better if he didn't.

As Head of State he only needs a diplomatic passport.

He should also go to areas like Walking Street and Soi 6 and pray for the lost souls.

He told reporters that he had heard so much about places like Pat Pong , Soi Cowboy and Nana plaza that he wished to see them for himself , purely in the line of perhaps saving a few souls. If time permits he might check out Thermaes and Pattaya too.

Yes, a state that has no citizens who were actually born there.

Does he still travel on diplomatic and sovereign immunity, this King?

But he will still have to remove his Papal Tiara for the compulsory welcome photo at immigration.

Are you deliberately demoting the Papa? Eminence is used for lowly Cardinals.

He would be better off staying where he is and trying to sort out the institutionalised mess that is his organisation.

Pope does Pattaya but doesn't meet Debbie.

Fingerprints and foot prints at Immigration then straight down to Soi Buckou or whatever it is for a few pints with the locals and then the pub quiz...…...What does the Pope wear under his robe/tent/ Real Madrid traditional costume?

No smoking within 5 metres of buildings so will have to leave the smoking handbag in the pope-mobile??

As italian and roman citizen, detest this pontiff, because of his relationship with radical neo-progressive movement (George Soros, UE, NGOs e company...)

So, will he also visit the site of the Death Railway when comes to Thailand?

He'll hardly stand out from the crowd.  Just another bloke in a frock on Walking Street

Just another "tourist" from the West!

Indeed. He's trying to weasel the Catholic Church back into politics and political influence that they once enjoyed. And it ain't for anyone's benefit but their own,
