Renewing Expired Thai Bank Credit Card

Featured Replies

Hi all,

We live far outside Thailand, girlfriend has Bangkok Bank Credit Card (VISA) which has recently expired. Her story is that the bank will not renew the card on written instructions from her and post to our address in farangland or to an address in LOS - the replacement would have to be issued to her personally.

Repayment of a small loan was allegedly credited to this VISA account so obviously getting access to the funds requires a new card.

G/F would not have updated her address so the one that bank holds is likely to be incorrect and I don't think she holds any other accounts with them.

Seems strange to me as I would think normally a bank just would send a new one out automatically (which we need to cancel if this has occurred) or would take written instructions on an alternative arrangement.

Can anyone confirm that my understanding is correct as she is unlikely to be in LOS any time soon?

Thanks

Ive had numerous credits cards issued in Thailand over the years and they (regardless of the identity of the issuing bank) have always automatically issued a new card (in advance of the expiry date of the old card) and sent same (by registered mail) to the address noted in the account.....in practice someone at office reception just signs the receipt and the letter winds it way to me....

maybe the problem is that no one is at the address in Thailand who can acknowledge receipt of the registered mailed envelope (containing the new card?)..... (if you or your GF has a family member or friend in Thailand who can receive the letter, it shouldn't be a problem for that family member or friend to re-send the envelope to you AFAIK)...BUT if no one is in Thailand to receive the letter (containing the new card) the bank might just keep the card and wait for your GF to pick it up (and refuse to mail it to a foreign address)....

yr GF should probably just notify the bank of a new address in Thailand (a friend's/family member's place?) and then have that person receive the new automatically issued card (and then have that person forward it to your GF)...
