Consumer price index rises 0.52 per cent

The consumer price index, or inflation, in August increased 0.52 per cent compared to the same month last year but was lower than the 0.98 per cent witnessed in July this year, according to the Commerce Ministry on Monday.

 

Inflation in the first eight months of this year increased 0.87 per cent compared to the same period last year, the ministry said.

 

A price increase of 5.15 per cent for fresh food – mainly sticky rice, pork, egg, fruit and vegetables – is the main reason inflation rose in August.

However, energy costs decreased 5.16 per cent following a drop in global prices, the ministry said.

 

With the global economy, including the country’s, witnessing slight growth, the ministry maintains that inflation this year will be between 0.7 per cent and 1.3 per cent.

With government price controls, government-owned electric & water utilities, government-owned hospitals, government-owned energy exploration and production, farm subsidies and government soft loans, etc., accuracy of the Thai consumer price index is debatable at best.

5.15 % for food? every time something goes up it seems far more than that, and why do imported foods go up, with the strong baht the opposite should be happening.

Water/rubbish collection fees are going up this month  so the lady who collects our contributions told us. 0.52%?

You cannot believe any Government anywhere with the inflation figures, they are not figures that "the man in the street ( or woman)." recognizes.

Inflation is not a word Thais understand, what they understand is...…………."prices up!"

And with inefficient government owned airlines and railways and blood sucking politicians and senior civil servants the pig trough needs to be topped up. The CPI index growth matters little to the hiso elite.

Their wealth growth is greater than the CPI index.
