(Reuters) - Alphabet Inc's Google is shifting its Pixel smartphone production to Vietnam from China starting this year as it builds a cheap supply chain in Southeast Asia, the Nikkei business daily reported.

The move comes as labor costs are rising in China along with added pressure from spiraling tariffs due to the ongoing Sino-U.S. trade tensions.

The U.S. internet giant plans to move most of its American-bound hardware out of China, including the Pixel phones and its smart speaker Google Home, Nikkei said.

The company plans to ship about 8 million to 10 million smartphones this year, double from a year ago, making Vietnam a key part of Google's drive for growth in the smartphone market, the newspaper added.

Google will shift some production of the Pixel 3A phone to Vietnam before the end of this year, Nikkei reported citing sources.

For its smart speakers, some production is likely to be moved to Thailand but the company's new product development and initial production for its hardware lineup will still be in China, the newspaper said.

Google did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the matter, outside regular business hours.

Why would they come to Thailand, the currency issue alone is enough to put a lot of people off.

It's over for Thailand, has been for a long time. Everyone's been going to Vietnam for business for many years already.

Thailand won't benefit from the US / Chinese trade war because it's too expensive and the rules are too much, plus they treat foreigners like <deleted> here.

For the currency they should go to England. Very cheap now.

Both Indonesia and Vietnam are still far behind Thailand, mainly because of the insufficient infrastructure, labor efficiency and technology readiness. Indonesia is stable on the growth trend due to its buoyant domestic demand with the largest population number, however, its infrastructure development is really needed upgrading to maintain or improve the rank.

This is a relative thing. You choose Thailand over UK due to the lower labor costs. However, the rising THB increases the labor costs for companies based in other currencies. Still, despite the rising THB and falling Pound, the UK is still far more expensive than Thailand.

Far behind, but closing the gap. And if more and more companies like Google move their operations to Vietnam, that will accelerate it's development. These trends have a surprising way of compounding, such that the changes are slow at first, but speed up quickly - in both directions. Thailand's current government will cost the Thai people a lot of lost opportunity in the future. In this day and age, 2 decades can transform a country like Vietnam - just look at China. In 2 decades, the Thai people might be asking themselves, "What happened?" I sincerely hope not.
