UK lawmakers reject PM Johnson's request for early election

It would of course only get through  if a (Tory) majority  government  were to be elected. Ironically  it is being used to ensure  that an election,  the only realistic  way out of the current  impasse,  cannot  be held,  as it would  very possibly  result in a Tory majority  government.

The Fixed Term Parliament Act (FTP act) was a result  of the Coalition Government. Very much the child of the Lib Dems it is now being misused (or perhaps used as intended)  to stand in the way of a democratic  resolution  of this impasse. Without the antics of the opposition  parties an election  could be held before the 31st of October.  If the election resulted in a "remain government" then I should imagine that the EU stands ready to allow an extension  - it is no exaggeration  to suggest  that such an extension could be  granted  as late  as 2359 hours on the 31st of October ! If the election  were to result in a Johnson Government  being returned it would result in leaving as planned.

It's difficult  to escape  the conclusion,  reinforced by Tony Blair's recent comments,  that the opposition  are avoiding  an election  because they suspect that they would  lose it.

Appreciated. My point was that if he wins by a similar margin in which he 'won'(!) the other day the motion would pass as there isn't a requirement for a 2/3rds majority.

BJ also has this little snippet at his disposal but whether or not he'll wheel it out remains to be seen.

  • Crafty Corbyn  did a magnificent job in putting Boris in a tiny little corner. The UK  owes him a great deal of gratitude in stopping a no deal  disaster.

  • Corbyn shows his true colours. He's been shouting for more than 2 years for a GE and now, when he gets the chance, he runs away like a coward.

  • Yes, should have done a second and clear referendum long time ago already. What are they afraid of?

It is unlikely in such a scenerio that the parties who abstained would di so on a vote to repeal

The use of the snippet is already planned for use after a no deal is enacted

Are you sure that the "snippet" - The Civil Contingencies Act - is planned for use?  Are you saying that it is the government's  intention to create a situation  which will  allow it to govern,  effectively,  with emergency  powers?

If you are going to make such ambitious  claims then you really should back them up with facts,  or people may suspect your tongue foil hat has slipped over your eyes.  Every government  , of whatever hue,  has had these or similar  powers on the statute books for a very long time - since we started  electing governments in fact. They have rarely been used,  and then only  when there has been an existential  threat to the country, not to the government.

Mind you,  rereading my last paragraph,  it could be said that we have abandoned electing our governments!

There is no plan anymore - just a driverless bus led by a bleeding blind man amongst a bus full of terrified opportunists screaming and fighting amongst each other like rats in a sack  as they try to get off whilst an appalled nation and world watches with horror and disdain as how it was allowed to come to this monstrous impasse.

And this man is PM - watch the horror  as he (reportedly drunk) goes full Alan Partridge in front of impassive police in front of whom he had planned day one of his ever so clever election campaign. The ditch is waiting.....

So now you say he was reportedly drunk, what else have you got up your sleeve....?

Do you know what brand of loo paper he uses to make your point, or will it be he was seen buying a kebab on the quiet...Tell all, it's what you do...

I rather suspect  he doesn't  know what he is going to claim next - he makes it up as he is going along.  I suggest the product of an overactive  imagination...

I have a different explanation.....????

I think you will find that they are on standby  for specific (non military) tasks such as the distribution  of medicines and so on.  That is a very different  matter to having the Army "run the country".

Well if he is not drunk then he is going mad - what rabbit will he pull out of his hat for his next appearance. Unfortunately this isn't Have I Got News for You but the World Stage. Brexit the gift that keeps on taking.

One could have guessed this wouldn't end well...

There was never a plan. There was a lot of promises and wishful thinking but never an actual plan.

No great surprise then theres still isn’t one apart from the no-deal, commit economic hari Kari cracker that Brexiters are now willing to accept.
