Thailand has a long history of Indians coming in' working hard' obtaining citizenship or residency status and investing money.  In  Bangkok, there are several Condominiums and Hotels that are Indian owned.  I know a few of the owners personaly and all of them are fluent Thai speakers and citizens.  They are frugal- do not show off their wealth- and keep a low profile

 

As far as the bar business- I do not know of any that open bars but some of the more prosperous do drink and enjoy a night out with the boys.

 

There is no doubt that India is becoming more affluent . I see many Indian tour groups coming ito Hotels in Watana, Bangkok and eating in the restaurants.

 

I have found them to be quite polite but mostly  keep  to themselves or otjher people from the sub continent.

 

I doubt Indian tourist during the next 5 years will make a huge  impact on Thai tourism but it is certainly a market that will be travelling as incomes grow.

I live in Bangkok and visit Pattaya often. None of the local people I have spoken with even like Indian people. Everyone tells me that they are cheap, rude and smell. I know this to be true because I worked with Indian people for many years. I have literally seen bar girls stand in the doorway and tell the Indian men to go somewhere else.

True, some of the most gentrified people in Bangkok.  Conversations are always intellectual and fun.

I've had more than my fair share of soapies. While waiting for the tub to fill, I'd chat with the girls, and invariably the subject of favorite/least favorite customers came up. Absolutely 100% agreed that men from India didn't want to get cleaned up in the bath and were mainly interested in butt sex. As Sgt. Joe Friday would say, "Just the facts, ma'am."

Someone's dreaming waiting for "rich Indians" to come and save you. Rich Indians go to first world countries just like rich farangs do.

Let's understand this a bit. First, India is not a homogenous country, or society, unlike most Western countries. "India" exists on many different levels, economically, socially, education wise, urban - metro/ urban- small city/ villager. My "Indian" may be completely different from your "Indian", depending on whom you've been exposed to, where and in which milieu you mingled with them. So we have many different types of Indians coming to Thailand. Those on a cheap package tour, maybe first timers anywhere abroad, only get taken to Bkk and Pattaya. Slightly more upper class, who'll go to Bkk and Phuket, but still stay in a hotel around 1500-2000 baht per day. These guys may have been to Singapore/ Malaysia/ Sri lanka. Lastly, the well-heeled Indian, well-travelled, highly educated, goes (In Thailand) to Koh Samui, Phi Phi, Krabi etc, come in foursomes, two couples, or a family. The really, really rich Indian, unfortunately, doesn't visit Thailand at all, because in India, for that class, saying you're going to Thailand, is "low society". This lot holidays in Europe or the US, luxury Med cruises, etc. 

So we can't look at Indians as a whole. I've been visiting Thailand since the late 70s, and now living in Bkk in my condo since 6 years, and have met a lot of Indians, so this is what I've learnt. Plus visited India many times and mingled with good families.

Mmmm, wake up call, buddies. I too notice it’s mostly the Indians and Chinese at the 4 and 5 star hotels. Lots of farangs in guesthouses though! And yes, dwindling ! Cheap Charlie farangs are unwanted here, it appears. Gone are the golden days! Let’s face it. Thailand was a haven for cheap Charlie’s, regardless of caste, creed or for that matter, skin colour!

You missed one of the biggest and by far the most prominent group of all in Pattaya. The traders. They come over in groups of of 5 or 6 to buy stock for their shops/market stalls in India.Scruffily dressed and the ones that have earned Indians the reputation of cheap charlies and treating the girls with no respect.

I firmly believe that the indians are going to destroy Thailand as far as a suitable place to holiday for any civilized farang. They (and I have seen this) urinate in groups in the middle of Pattaya,s streets, wash their underwear in hotel swimming pools, are ignorant and arrogant (a strange combination), and are looking for any possible way to abuse the system. They spend no money, and are of no value whatsoever to the Thai economy, but most important of all, they will drive out all civilized Europeans. I am not a racist, I am just reporting what I have seen, ie my experiences of this w****less race of people.

This article does seem rather like an advert and promotion for somebody. It does not bear much resemblance to reality and I think there is a bit of 'clutching-at-straws' going on.

I'm fine with giving Thailand up to the Indians. They can have it and make it their playground while making many Thais rich beyond their wildest dreams.

 

I know deep down that Thais love the people of India and would never make comments that they "all" stink. Well actually, I heard many Thais say that many times in the years I lived there, but I bet money will change their perceived olfactory effect, and a blissful union will flourish with Indians and Thais sharing the country in beautiful harmony. I'm getting a little teary-eyed just thinking about all that mutual love.

That used to be more common but it is less so now. I noticed the reality a few years ago. The girls charge Indians less and in many cases prefer them to Europeans. I know a couple of very attractive escorts/massage girls who only go with Indians.

[Why Me]

There's a logistical aspect to this. From all Indian cities direct flights to Bkk are at most 4hrs. and cheap. Which means for the middle-class Indian family, the young affluent and like, even just a long weekend in Pattaya or Bkk is an option. Not so for Westerners.

 

And, of course, for young Indian males suffocated by their strait-laced society, Thailand is just the place to cut loose. Companies catering to them are on to a good thing. The market is endless.

How do you define rich? Thailand offers many things that first world countries dont offer. Poor people save up to go on  holiday. Middle class people travel. You seem to have a very narrow view of who travels, where and why. There are plenty of wealthy Europeans in Pattaya though they may go to places you cant afford to visit.
