Sanook reported that a majority of Thais are in favor of building a new airport in Nakhon Pathom.

The provincial capital of the province lies 57 kilometers west of the capital Bangkok.

In a Nida Poll 65% of respondents thought it was a good idea citing benefits to tourism and the wider sharing of revenue and business opportunities.

But 18% disagreed saying that Suvanabhumi and Don Mueang airports could cope and that developing those airports would be better.

Some 14% offered no opinion and 1.7% had no idea.

In the poll that asked 1,273 people over the age of 15 on 12th and 13th of September just over 62% said that hadn't even been on a plane.

I was thinkin' the old military airfield where the Chandrabeksa military hospital presently is near the border with Suphanburi in Kampaeng Saeng...not the best connections to BKK...surrounded by sugar cane with a leafy canopied tree lined access road to the airfield...

farmer 'good morning, sir nice day sir...' colonel phukup 'pack yer <deleted> and get ready to move, we're building a new airport here...'...

West of the city. It would be a good location for tourists heading to Kanchanaburi / Suan Pueng or down to Hua Hin / Surat Thani or up to Tak / Phitsanalouk way.

Swampy and Donny are absolutely fine for getting up Phitsanulok way.

This is an inane idea. Hua Hin has a perfectly fine airport. That is not being used for anything. Who on earth knows why. It is beyond a waste of resources.

Hua Hin has been considered as an international airport. It may yet go ahead. I wonder if people proclaimed the BTS or MRT would be a waste of resources when they were first proposed. BKK was about 20 years in the planning and now it and DMK are taking massive numbers each year.

I'm personally very happy that some people in this country do have foresight to plan for future requirements of infrastructure. I

I realise they are. I was simply highlighting that West, south and north are accessible. BKK is better probably better than DMK to get west and south. I use DMK regularly and often find driving north to Pathum Thani and then using Kanchanaburi faster than the Don Mueang toll way to get to Thonburi.

Hua Hin airport may go ahead? Hua Hin already has an international airport, all it lacks is flights. It is a wasted space with just one flight daily (to Kuala Lumpur). Without any improvements it could handle far more. With some additional runway and terminal improvements it could still more. As it currently is, it is terribly under utilized.

As I said, it is already considered as an international airport. And it may go ahead. It can't go ahead without more flights.

I think the reporter needs to reset his compass,,,,,,

or get a new calibrated one.

For once the report is right, it is WEST not east of Bangkok; towards Kanchanaburi 8-)

Don't get me wrong but 1'273 people, of which 62% (almost two thirds) never flew ..........

Please publish something of REAL relevance instead. The country's leaders proved in the past their utter ignorance; North of Bangkok is Don Meuang, then some 50kms Southeast away, Souvannaphoum and now the completion of a isosceles triangle ............. absolute nonsense.

Throw the air force out of Don Meuang, make use of all the finger docks at Souvannaphoum (rather than those bus gates which take an hour to disembark) and speak to real, professional airport planners and not the ridiculous survey you so proudly printed about!

Or is it, that there is some "cheap" land to sell - Souvannaphoum springs to mind which started decades ago as "Nong Ngoo Hao" where Chatichai Choonhavan had thousands of truck of fill-up earth poured into to fill up, at the price of pristine planting earth. Among other little funny stories from those days ????

Now, that would actually make sense. So, sadly, it won't happen...

Make sense in what aspect exactly? You don't actually explaining what  you are concerned about.

All I know is that there are tenders floating around for changes to Hua Hin.

Air Asia inked a deal for 36 flights a day out of HH airport well over a year ago. They have not been given permission by the authorities to fly yet. Flights were to have started a long time ago. Something is up with that airport. There is a reason why it is not being used, and it is a not a good reason, makes no sense, and is a bizarre waste of resources.

Sorry Syd, when the article was first posted it read as EAST.

It has been edited. The report was wrong in it's original post.

My first quote was a cut and past from the original article.

Just to clear that up.

I have been advised about capitial works for a runway extension as well as other things at HH.

A few years back they spent a fortune improving the airport. Then nothing happened. Hopefully someone will come to their sense. It is a perfect spot for a regional airport. There is nothing around it to support air travel. The closest airports south of HH are a tiny airport in Chumporn, and the one in Surat. It is beyond inane.

IF ITS AN HOUR FROM  bkk why do they need airport

Why not.... a new regional airport that could serve domestic flights to other provinces... taking some of the strain away from Bangkoks two main airports and roads.

Nakhon Pathom is still fairly central so could easily serve north/south/east & west very nicely.

Don't narrow your thinking to just international flights or think Bangkok is the only place people want to be in Thailand.
