BANGKOK, 18 September 2019 (NNT) - The Minister of Energy admitted on Tuesday, that the Saudi oil refinery attack has affected world oil prices. It is expected that Thai oil prices will increase by 1-2 baht if the problem can’t be resolved within two days.

Energy Minister Sonthirat Sonthijirawong, also disclosed that the relevant agencies have provided continuous assistance to flood-affected people both in Phichit and Ubon Ratchathani and managed the water situation to the best of their ability. It is expected that he will visit Ubon Ratchathani to help the flood victims this weekend. The PTT and the Electricity Authority of Thailand (EGAT) have also done their best to provide assistance to the flood victims.

After the flood water has subsided, PTT service stations will be used to sell essential products of the flood victims. He has confirmed that aside from the government and related agencies, members of the Palang Pracharath Party have also continually provided assistance to the flood victims. Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha, Prime Minister and the Minister of Defense, has instructed all sectors to help the flood victims. Such assistance and rehabilitation requires time.

As to whether the Saudi oil refinery attack near the Bahrain border will affect Thailand, Mr Sonthirat disclosed that it is a global issue because Saudi Arabia is a large oil production source and it will affect the amount of oil available on the world market by about five percent which is relatively high.

In the short term, Thailand won’t have an oil shortage because there is a backup plan to ensure the import of sufficient refined crude oil.

However, if it affects the sale price and the problem can’t be solved within two days, Thai oil prices will increase by 1-2 baht. It is also necessary to follow up on the crude oil price outlook on the world market over the long term.
