State Railway fences merchants out of local Mor Chit market

Barricades were erected on Friday (September 20) near Mor Chit Bus Terminal as police joined with officials from State Railway of Thailand (SRT) to fence out merchants from a local market who have been accused of intruding into the area and impeding new railway construction.

The barricade encircled a 56,000 square metre area belonging to the SRT.

The acting SRT governor Worawut Mala said law enforcement had to be used after the merchants were repeatedly told since September 2, including through signage, that they must evacuate within seven days.

However, influential businessman Chaiyasit Ngamsub and his lawyer showed reporters bills and an official document signed on March 20, 2008, which appeared to show approval for utilising the area. The document has not yet been invalidated, said Chaiyasit.

He added that SRT has received a budget of more than Bt100 million to compensate venders in the market and no one had seen the money to date. He said he suspects SRT is trying to avoid having to pay those who would be affected from having to move out.

SRT officials, police show up to evict vendors from market in Chatuchak

By The Nation

Officials from the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) and police officers showed up in the Mor Chit area of Bangkok’s Chatuchak district on Friday (September 20) with eviction orders for vendors who have been illegally using the 35-rai plot on Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road, which belongs to the SRT.

The officials also blocked the entrance of the area and called on the vendors to move out immediately as they said the stalls are obstructing the construction of the SRT Red Line suburban railway system for the Bang Sue-Rangsit extension.

Acting SRT governor Worawut Mala said the agency had to step in because the vendors have been ignoring their calls for cooperation. The last such request was issued on September 2, when officials had called on the vendors to move out within seven days.

Meanwhile, businessman Chaisit Ngamsap and his lawyer produced receipts and a 2008 “contract” that “has not been revoked” as evidence to back his claim that he had been allowed to develop the 35-rai plot and collect fees for the SRT.

He also said that the SRT has been given Bt100 million to expropriate land for the rail system but has failed to pay compensation to the affected vendors. He also voiced suspicion that the SRT is trying to evict the vendors because it does not want to compensate the vendors or pay for the demolition of structures.

Usual bully boy tactics.... you have a contract but SRT ignores it.

Surprise, surprise!

The incompetent SRT are recognised debt defaulters. Ask Honeywell who were awarded damages of 37 billion baht against SRT by the Supreme Court.

SRT are still refusing to pay; probably because they are virtually bankrupt and in debt to the tune of 100 billion baht.
