House panel agrees 3 herbicides must be banned immediately

chemsubs.jpg

The House Committee to Explore Ways to Control Farm Chemicals has agreed to ban three herbicides, namely paraquat, glyphosate, and chlorpyrifos, with immediate effect.

Committee chairman Mr. Chavalit Vichayasuth told the media today that the committee, after spending three hours debating the matter, agreed unanimously that the three weed killers must be banned for the safety of the consumers.

He said that the recommendation by the National Hazardous Substances Committee, that all parties concerned conduct further studies on the impacts of the chemicals, was just a delaying tactic to delay any action.

Well, the Agricultural ministers will have their connections with the influential Agri-giants to find a way for another delay...

Omg i hope so. Many people plead these things are safe but living in a small farming community the evidence is crystal clear. 4 people dead in a year all farm sprayers for a couple days a year. Its all it took for all these guys to end up with weird cancers that killed them real quick.

I would be very surprised if this ever happened. Too many stockpiles and way too much vested interests.

Should be added, health of the farmers,as they spray too much, with little protection.

chlorpyrifos is a pesticide, not a herbicide, & if all 3 banned immediately expect food shortages to follow.

surely there are other, less harmful, products to be found.

I'm not defending their use, but until thai farmers are educated about safer alternatives, an immediate ban might be counterproductive.

Impressive decision!

Do it NOW !! and make everyone safer.

Maybe time to change the National Substances Committee members... obviously something is preventing common sense from prevailing ?
I have an idea what that might be... $$$$$

The wife and I are all for it. Now when can we expect to receive the  list of  safe environmentally friendly alternatives???  So far the silence has been deafening.

imo the food will be available because the price of it will rise so dramatically that many will be forced to eat alternatives..

It depends what you need to do. There is plenty of information available on the Internet. If you simply want a spray and forget solution then you will probably be disappointed.

If they can easily smuggle ICE and other drugs into the country it will be easy to smuggle pesticides as well. Just a difference in price.

I doubt there was a single, rational scientist involved in the whole process.  Glyphosate is one of the safest (if not the safest) herbicide available, and represents no significant threat to human health.  Ban it and farmers will revert to using older, more dangerous chemicals.

Maybe, only if you follow the instructions & wear protective clothing.  From what I've read about the legal cases where workers have got cancer, they were getting soaked in the application process.  I use it around the garden, spot spraying weeds at ground level, with mask on, rubber gloves, shower afterwards.  You see farmers here spraying everywhere, into the wind, no protection.

There isn't one ,at least None on the same level and cost. They Won't stop the use of what's still available for years to come.I've seen this in other countries with the ban of DDT and Nicotine sprays.

Nope.

Is glyphosate likely to contribute to the development of cancer?

Animal and human studies were evaluated by regulatory agencies in the USA, Canada, Japan, Australia, and the European Union, as well as the Joint Meeting on Pesticide Residues of the United Nations and World Health Organization (WHO). These agencies looked at cancer rates in humans and studies where laboratory animals were fed high doses of glyphosate. Based on these studies, they determined that glyphosate is not likely to be carcinogenic.

I can't imagine what we would do without it. We don't use a lot, but it is pretty important to get weeds that don't die when they are cut. We had a major grass problem this year. Nothing we could do but spray it.

Hopefully the government will be rolling out the alternatives. Farming is still important in Thailand right?

Probably because  there are  none. But if  such are  presented in the same  way  glysophate was promoted as safe  then  I doubt  it will  be true. An interesting  question is if there is  a global rejection  of  glysophate then where  does that  leave  Monsanto & Co with interest in  GM  glysophate resistant  seed?

It has already invaded  seed stock.

It's a sad day for the farming community,i don't know how my neighbours and surrounding villages will survive economically in the short term without them.

They were fine for millenia. I don't know what your neighbours are growing but I saw a documentary about rubber and they spray paraquat (without protection) because they are scared of the snake. I think there is plenty of safer alternatives. For example a lawn mower and if it's too expensive then use some grazing animals and you get some additional revenues stream and keep the soil healthy.

If you search YouTube there is plenty of farmers that stopped using glyphosate and use no till and cover crop instead.
