BANGKOK(NNT) - The trade war between China and the United States has caused a worldwide economic slowdown. It has also decreased the number of registered new businesses. Even so, the average number of new business registrations grew in the first eight months.

The Department of Business Development (DBD) has reported that the number of new business registrations in August fell seven percent compared with the same month last year to 5,973. However, it is considered normal for new business registrations to slow down at the end of the year. The top three sectors engaged in new businesses were building construction, property development and restaurants with a total investment of 17.17 billion baht. The new business registrations edged up one percent in the first eight months of the year to 50,654 more than in the same period last year.

Although new business registrations usually decrease in the last quarter of the year, a survey of 55 second-tier cities, for which the government has issued economic stimulus measures, show that the number of retail business registrations has begun to increase and has moved into 3rd place after construction and transportation. It is considered a rising star business which is expected to grow appreciably at the end of the year as the Taste, Shop, Spend measure takes effect, which should see business registrations reach 72,000-75,000 this year according to the target.

Businesses that went into liquidation in the first eight months totaled 10,016, up three percent on the same period last year. In August, businesses reporting their liquidation totaled 1,755, down one percent, resulting in a total of 743,955 operating businesses as of August 31, 2019.

Western-styled math says there has been a net loss of 2% on the same period last year.
