Kasikorn Research Centre expects Bangkokians to spend up to Bt4.8 billion during this year’s Vegetarian or Jae Festival, up 2.4 per cent from the same period last year.

The research centre said most Bangkokians are tightening their belts due to the economic slowdown.

This year’s Vegetarian Festival runs from September 29 to October 7.

I've been a vegetarian for over 45 years.  Never was a big spender.  When I worked with farmers in Loei 40+ years ago, lunch was sometimes a handful of sticky rice, some salt, a couple Thai chili peppers and whatever odd weeds they could gather out back.

I often see Thais gathering their "veggies" from the street side where there's no cash register...

Vegetarians are not big spenders.   Now there is a news flash.  One of the perks of the diet:  its low cost.  The other perk is good health free of heart disease and other ailments.

People with Diabetes do not make great Vegetarians, as protein is

one of the things they can and should eat as much of, plant protein does

not have the helpful minerals that animal proteins have. I have no idea that

the veggie people really spend much less than meat eaters, maybe less on the

food that they buy, but they still stay in Hotels and guest houses, they still get around

on taxis and other means of transport. Still fly in and out from their home countries

etc.  I guess with the Vegetarian festival soon, this is about visitors who are coming

to Thailand for that purpose.
