PRD steps up efforts to establish a Fake News Watch Network

 

   

NAKHON RATCHASIMA (NNT) - The Government’s Public Relations Department (PRD) is accelerating efforts to establish a public sector network to address the problem of fake news spreading on social media.

 

At 10:55 a.m. today (Oct 2), the PRD Director-General, Lt. Gen. Sansern Kaewkamnerd, chaired a seminar titled "Establishing the Fake News Watch Network" at the Hermitage Hotel and Resort in Nakhon Ratchasima province.

 

The seminar was attended by public health volunteers in northeastern Thailand. At the event, participants learned ways to identify fake news and became aware of the importance of this issue. The seminar lasts until tomorrow, with the aim to establish a news and information network supported by all sectors.

 

Topics discussed at today’s seminar included the role of public health volunteers and communication for social development, understanding fake news, distribution of the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society’s information on fake news, related laws and penalties, its impact on the economy and society and ways to combat fake news.

 

The speakers included Dr. Methee Chancharuporn of the Institute for People’s Primary Health, representatives from the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society, academics, media members and volunteers.

Government PRD in charge of fighting fake news? How would they know what was fake or the truth? They have a stable of "creative writers" to spread government doctrine not investigative journalists.

The first door they should knock on needs to be the Tourism Authority of Thailand(TAT).

The screws on liberty are being tightened ever more firmly.

The junta forces alone declare and define what is truth:

'War is peace'.

That is all the 'true news' the junta forces want us to believe and servilely accept ...

In principle I like the idea that people who publish fake news should be responsible for it and it should be possible to prosecute and punish them.

But how to implement that and who will decide what is fake news, now that is a BIG challenge.

On the one hand in June 2014 we had the PM hating 1984, with those reading it charged with 'eating a sandwich with political intent'.

Any news critical of the Fearless Leader, or any news critical of the government, or any news lacking government approval...is by definition ‘fake’. Everyone knows that.

Bluesofa, I am disappointed in you! You seem to have misinterpreted Orwell (as that bad boy did in the video clip above). If you understand Orwell correctly, then you will see that there is no contradiction at all between Orwell and the great Prayut. How we should read Orwell is very clearly in the following way:

 

1. The government is like a caring farmer who looks after the creatures committed to its care. Only bad animals rebel against that loving care.

 

2. Orwell wants us to love that caring Big Brother manager of all our lives. Don't forget the happy, feel-good ending that Orwell chose for his Nineteen Eighty-Four novel -  Winston Smith finally sees the light, sees the error of his ways, and comes to 'love Big Brother'. We should do the same. Orwell calls the government 'Big Brother' because he wants us to understand and trust our caring government. The government really is like a tender-hearted, supportive and loyal older brother. If you listen to older brother Prayut, you will know the right and best way to live.

 

3. Orwell is giving us all the right prescriptions for living. He really does believe (and wants us to believe, like himself) that Freedom is Slavery. Look at what nasty people do when they have a bit of freedom, such as those trouble-making students in Hong Kong!

 

4. The great Prayut knows how to read Orwell (you evidently do not); if we read Orwell correctly (as a manual, an instruction guide from our wise rulers), we will love Big Brother and hate all who stand against him.

Thailand's current draconian defamation laws seem more than capable of handling issues such as "fake news." By many accounts the defamation laws are too aggressive and don't appear ironically to rely on true facts in their application. But of course charges of fake news would then have to be judged ultimately by the alleged independent judiciary system.

What the Government’s Public Relations Department is doing is essentially establishing judiciary power within the Executive Branch of the government to prosecute and punish alleged fake news. This should be deemed unconstitutional, an abuse of power and vigorously challenged.
