Travellers Cheques

Featured Replies

Can you still use them in Thailand? If so what do you have to show when you exchange them, is it just a passport?

Sorry I've just realised I may have posted this in the wrong forum

You can buy and sell travellers' cheques in Thailand, but only at selected bank branches. You will find it difficult or impossible to use them anywhere else. The bank will only want to see your passport and probably the receipt from the original purchase.

Given the ubiquity of ATM machines, few would find TCs useful. In particular, you will probably not be able to change them at all in remote areas, whereas ATM machines exist pretty much everywhere.

If they want to see the receipt that would be a problem as the ink has faded on it. When I last changed TCs in Thailand I wasn't asked to show the receipt although that was over 12 years ago

You will also pay a fee PER CHEQUE when cashing them, I believe it is a total of 153 Baht, which makes small denomination cheques pretty poor value.

are they still around?  Goodness, I thought they had disappeared years ago. Talk about an old fashioned and inconvenient way to deal with travel money.
