New steps to boost tourism approved

The council of the economic ministers today (October 11) approved in principle new measures, proposed by the Tourism and Sports Ministry, to enhance tourism in the short, medium, and long terms.

The short term measures, to be implemented this year, will see an increase in the numbers of agents and locations offering VAT refund service to foreign tourists. Also, some rules governing the travel of foreigners in Thailand will also be reviewed.

Under the medium and long term measures coming into force next year, special loans will be offered to hotels and accommodation operators to upgrade their premises.

New safety rules will be introduced to lessen the risks of accidents or death of foreign tourists.

The country will host major sports and entertainment events to attract foreign visitors while seeking more international conferences to be held here.

Thailand expects 41.8 million foreign tourist arrivals next year, with total spending of Bt2.22 trillion, said Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Governor Yuthasak Supasorn. This year it has targeted a total of 40 million, spending Bt2.04 trillion.

The number of foreign tourist arrivals in the first half stood at 26.5 million, up 2.83 per cent year on year. TAT expects 13.3 million to arrive in the rest of the year.

The meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, also acknowledged the latest assessment of the local and global economies.

Free flights and hotels and visas for quality Chinese and Indian tourists will do the trick. May not be good for revenue though.

Similar to the "Shop - Eat - Spend" campaign, this new strategy to enhance tourism will streamline the whole process. Pass the arrivals gate, hand over your wallet and then deported. Gate – Wallet - Deport

Statistician: expect a decline down to 1/2 of the usual numbers

Thai: no ploplem, we will charge the remaining half double the prices 1/2 x 2 = same same

No mention of actually staffing the empty IO desks in arrivals. That's a good start

Thats 2 arrivals for every 3 people living here. Do you really believe that? A complete absence of discussion about polluted air, plastics in the ocean, overcrowded beaches, two tier pricing for entrances, tourist rip-offs and city traffic jams. Tourists do not live in a news restricted world where everything here is just hunky dory like the govt would wish it to be.

Here is an idea to save their butt in the next few months. Winter getaway tourists will be arriving the next month or so. Quickly initiate an easy visa for them to stay longer. Do away with the TM30 completely, waste of time and has generated Thai tourism a whole load of bad press.

For god sake don't encourage business owners to go into debt even further, that is a complete loser. And please remember attracting "big events" takes money and lots of planning. probably not the best of ideas!

Need to get serious about pollution and trash otherwise don't waste your time on the other things!

If tourism is up why are they doing anything.

If that is the truth then why will they need new medical insurance, more hot air!

with total spending of Bt2.22 trillion

Nothing to do with show casing a nice place to visit for a holiday, blah, blah . Its the same old same old , " how much money can we extract from them"!

Most tourists come from China, so they live in a news restricted world and are told by their government what to believe.

It's about time to get the baht under control. There are a lot of other countries whose currency is not over bloated which makes them cheaper and more attractive to holiday in.

They can try all the gimmicks they want, but in my opinion it comes down mainly to what your normal tourist can afford and with the ridiculously expensive baht, not a lot.

Start with the basics. Free courses on manners and how to treat guests for all that have interaction with tourists. Eradicate rudeness, corruption, double pricing and overcharging.

Educate every Thai on cleanliness and having pride in their environment regarding pollution and trash.

Tessabhan to keep beaches clean daily and sewarage not to be pumped into the ocean.

Ah ha. Free condoms on arrival at last. Hope they have all sizes.

Do not need "new safety rules" if they are "enforced" by police like "old safety rules". The elephant in the room is the general lawlessness due to corruption and police not doing policing.

New steps......... Put exchange rate back to 74.9 baht to £1. Get rid of tm30. Make retirement visa for 5 years. Get rid of 90 for these visas and make it every 6 months. Stop duel pricing. Properly teach thais how to drive. Stop teaching kids how to write english for first 6 or 7 years yeath them how to speak english then introduce how to write. Treat everybody the same for tourist visas not special for russian or chinese, we would never rent to either. And where is BIG JOKE NOW

And we will make sure all the tourists have health insurance as opposed to those long term stayers who are less likely to not pay hospital bills.

Boosting the number of tourists arriving means more people to pickup the trash.

Two problems solved at once, Tourism up, Trash cleaned up. Check.

What tourist does not want to spend half their holiday picking up rubbish and cleaning the beach.

I agree with you and am genuinely seeking knowledge, why is the baht so strong at the moment?

The very first thing is to get the Baht down
