rooster59
VAT refunds: Big changes to "provide more convenience" to tourists Image: Thai Rath Thai Rath reported that following a ministerial decision there are big changes for tourists applying for VAT refunds in Thailand. In future tourists will be able to get refunds at most international airports and through agents outside Bangkok. In addition limits for cash reimbursement have been upped and tourists with small value items need not declare at airports. Tax advisor at the Revenue department Pinsai Suratwadee said that the changes would provide greater convenience to tourists who could now receive more money in cash at more locations. The "Downtown Vat Refund for Tourists" scheme has also been enhanced, he said. The changes are as follows: 1. Cash refunds will now be available at booths in ten international airports (up from just Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang before). Along with the two Bangkok airports they are: Phuket, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Hat Yai, U-Tapao, Krabi, Koh Samui and Surat Thani airports. 2. Agents can make VAT refunds at point of purchase downtown. This service was previously only available in Bangkok. 3. Limits of cash refunds have been upped from 12,000 baht per person to 30,000 baht per person. 4. Goods of less than 5,000 baht value no longer need to be declared to customs at international airports.
