BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand will host the 35th ASEAN Summit and related meetings in Bangkok and Nonthaburi from November 2 to 4, 2019. Outcomes from previous summits and key issues to be discussed next month include the ASEAN leaders’ vision statement on partnership for sustainability, the Bangkok Declaration on Combating Marine Debris in ASEAN, the Disaster Emergency Logistics System for ASEAN (DELSA), regional leaders’ statement on the ASEAN Cultural Year 2019 and ASEAN’s joint bid for the FIFA World Cup 2034.

The Director-General of the Department of ASEAN Affairs, Dr. Suriya Chindawongse, said Thailand will seek to enhance regional cooperation and establish connections between ASEAN members and non-ASEAN countries. The host country will focus on strategies to drive economic growth and the ASEAN Indo-Pacific Outlook, which promotes cooperation among countries in mainland and maritime areas of the Indo-Pacific region. ASEAN is ready to set the stage for different countries to hold constructive talks and together resolve various issues.

Thailand is also working to finalize the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), as it will help the bloc deal with changes and uncertainties. The Director-General of the Department of Trade Negotiations, Oramon Sapthaweetham, said all ASEAN member states have agreed to work together to conclude talks on the RCEP before Thailand’s ASEAN Chairmanship ends.

The 35th ASEAN Summit will be attended by leaders and representatives of over 20 nations. There will be related summits between ASEAN and non-ASEAN members and the private sector. The handover ceremony of the ASEAN Chairmanship will take place on November 4, with Thailand passing the ceremonial gavel to Vietnam.

Not too long ago, and ASEAN was THE topic at schools.

I had to teach my P. 6 students how to sing the ASEAN anthem in English. Pretty much, everything was ASEAN....

ASEAN English camps, ASEAN shows the culture of the included countries and a lot of wasted time for shows, dances, and tralala.

I can still sing the song: " Raise our flag, high sky-high, embrace the pride in our hearts......ASEAN, we are bond as one, looking out to the world." ( And so on....)

These days most primary students have no clue what ASEAN means, nor what the five letters stand for. Nor does the current government.

Having HIM at the top will, of course, be a lot of fun for all involved.

And his nose got longer and longer with every word. ASEAN.

Astonishing Silence Encountered All Nations.
