Daily News reported that despite efforts by the authorities to return the sidewalks of Bangkok to pedestrians local people continue to flout the regulations.

They said that signage was clear yet people continue to park on the pavements, ride motorcycles on them and vendors still use them to sell their wares.

All in view of boards promising fines up to 5,000 baht.

The latest to complain was a group of people on the Ratchada - Rama 3 road in the area of the entrance to the Bang Khlo - Chaeng wattana expressway.

They said that sidewalks were being used to park and ride on and vendors were selling all manner of things including amulets in the area.

People stopping to buy were causing snarl ups on the road, too, they complained to Daily News.

The issue of the use of sidewalks in the capital has divided opinion. While most people agree they should not be used as extra roads for vehicles a debate has raged about vendors vs pedestrians.

Many feel the character of the city is changing from a haphazard and popular past to a sanitized and ordered present and future, notes Thaivisa.

Daily News seemed to be adopting the side of the authorities in their story, Thaivisa further notes.

0n Sukhumvit near Thong Lor BTS there is a pizza hut, must be 10 bikes parked there all day long. Sometime it's not easy to get past them especially if there is a car parked on the pavement at the same time.

The police that check out the shops in the area sometimes have to use the road to get past the parked vehicles. They don't always seem happy with the situation but put up with it.
