A senior police spokesman has said that criminals who feign injury in an attempt to scam insurance face years in jail and heavy fines - or worse if they cause accidents.

Pol Col Krissana Patanaacharoen was commenting after a video clip was widely viewed on Thai social media.

The clip showed a man on Rama 9 Road in Bangkok crossing and deliberately throwing himself on the hood of a car that stopped in time. The driver then pulled into the side. It was not known how that was resolved.

Pol Col Krissana said that such criminality could be prosecuted under Article 358 related to criminal damage with the man being liable for a 3 year prison sentence, a 60,000 baht fine or both.

If he had caused an accident or injury the sentence and fine would be much worse, he said.

He asked the public to look out for such activity and report incidents to the police. INN reported that national police chief Pol Gen Chakthip Chaijinda was taking an interest in the case and was determined to stamp it out.

Thaivisa notes that sites like YouTube are full of such scams but reports of such activity in Thailand are relatively uncommon.

Thaivisa has reported a handful over the last few years but few if any have resulted in prosecution of the perpetrator caught on camera.

One area where Thailand will excel! No nonsense & jail time.

In certain European countries these clowns get huge payouts and if unsuccessful are still repeat offenders.

Yeah, or they could just look the maniac up to protect him from himself.

Does anyone remember the case of an extremely observant office worker who noticed that the same indian man was involved in 3 separate traffic accidents at a roundabout within viewing distance of her office ? Hopefully this guy will suffer the same fate ????

Get in line , it stretches around the corner and down the block....

There's dumb, then dumber then this guy comes along !

Reminds me of the episode of 'Fools and Horses' where Uncle Albert fell down a hole only to be found out in court that he had fallen down dozens of 'holes' in his life!!

I feel sorry for the driver, caught in a mess made by a complete idiot.
