Michael Owen’s son reveals heart-breaking loss of football dream

Michael Owen’s son James has opened up about the devastating impact of the rare eye condition that left him clinically blind and ended his childhood dream of becoming a professional footballer.

The 20-year-old was diagnosed with Stargardt disease aged eight. He now has little central vision and relies largely on his peripheral sight.

A childhood dream shattered

James said losing the possibility of following his father into football was particularly painful. “It was my dream to follow my dad's footsteps and be a footballer and have a really great career,” he said.

“To have that realisation it's not possible, it kills you.” He recalled returning from school in tears, convinced life was unfair.

Stargardt disease causes fatty deposits to build up in the retina, progressively damaging central vision. The condition affects roughly one in 10,000 people worldwide.

Michael admits the diagnosis left him devastated

Michael Owen recalled breaking down after learning of his son’s diagnosis, fearing what the future might hold.

“I wanted him to not feel sorry for himself, have a positive outlook on life,” the former England striker said. He also admitted feeling guilty, despite knowing the condition was not something he could control.

James has instead developed a determination to live without seeking sympathy. “I’d hate for people to feel sorry for me,” he said, pointing to his loving family and describing his father as a “really good model”.

Now his father wants a different future

Michael hopes James can eventually play a role at Manor House Stables, the racing operation he co-owns near Chester.

“He's nice and kind and he's determined,” Michael said. “He's a bloody good lad, a proper son, I'm proud of him.”

The family’s story features in Meet The Owens, a six-part Prime Video series following Michael, Louise and their four children as they balance family life with their horse-racing business.
