Thailand promoting Si Thep, Phanom Rung as World Heritage sites

BANGKOK(NNT)- The government has resolved to step up efforts to register several of its historic locations as World Heritage sites.

 

The third meeting of the national committee on the World Heritage Convention, chaired by the Deputy Prime Minister, Gen. Prawit Wongsuwan, acknowledged the results of the 43rd World Heritage Committee session in Baku, Azerbaijan, which took place between June 30 and July 10 this year. The gathering agreed to place Si Thep and Phanom Rung historical parks on its preliminary list of World Heritage sites. Thailand has been asked to provide documentation on the two sites to the committee to further their consideration, as well as undertake additional processing for Kaeng Krachan National Park.

 

The national committee also considered a draft report on conservation of the Dong Phaya Yen-Khao Yai forest, which is to be submitted so that it avoids being listed as a World Heritage Site in Danger.

 

The Natural Resources and Environment Minister, Varawut Silapa-acha, explained today that receiving World Cultural Heritage and World Natural Heritage status not only brings pride to Thailand but helps to attract tourists from across the globe, benefiting the nation’s economy.

I just got back from Phnom Rung. It is clean, well organized, well laid out, has a cute little market, great ruins and fabulous views. Its easily acessible. It is well worth a weekend trip for any tourist, and its a cheap trip too.

 

Si Thep is on my list.

And utterly ruin the sites in the process.

Was there a couple of weeks ago.  Si Thep is really a very minor site.  A couple of not very impressive ruins, and an excavation pit filled with skeletons (including one of a dog), and an elephant thigh bone.  Of course, historically significant, but not something that will bring in the tourists.

About 2 kms from  Phanom Rung , you can also visit Prasat Muang Tam
