Motorbike exhausts must meet Euro 4 standards

The Cabinet has approved the draft of a ministerial regulation that motorcycles manufactured in Thailand must reach the seventh level of exhaust emissions standards, or equivalent to the Euro 4 standard, deputy spokesman of the Office of the Prime Minister, Ratchada Thanadirek, announced today.

 

“This draft regulation underlines the government’s determination to solve the pollution caused by motorcycles,” Ratchada added. “Thailand’s emission standard is currently at the sixth level or equivalent to Euro 3.”

 

The regulation was announced by the Industry Ministry in January of this year and formally issued by the Thai Industrial Standard Institute (TISI) with the aim to reduce 50 per cent of the pollution from carbon dioxide and hydro carbons emitted by motorcycle exhausts. 

 

“The cabinet expects manufacturers to improve the standards of their products before the declaration of a ministerial regulation in the future. In this case, the announcement was issued more than 9 months ago,” Ratchada added.

It is caused by old, unregulated diesel trucks, lorries and buses.

One million Honda Waves going to and fro to work in BKK everyday do not emit 1% of the emissions and pollutants that 100 old buses and trucks do.

How about European driving standards first?

With ASEAN in progress will the forest and field burning be addressed? It's a huge polluter in SEA.

Depends how you look at it,noisy pipes sometimes get people killed also.

There are different levels of noise, what about a noisy bike that drives by just once

compared to the kids that have nothing better to do then run up and down the soi making as much noise they possibly can.

Two stroke motorbikes are no longer sold here in Thailand so I think the proper priority (as mentioned above) should be focused on the diesel trucks and buses. 

 

The latest clean diesel (emissions) technology requires a regenerative exhaust system (regen) on diesel vehicles which utilizes DEF (aka Diesel Exhaust Fluid) to remove all particulates and meet clean air standards in the USA and other countries.  This is the common sense solution which is now mandatory in most countries that have pollution problems... not that common sense exists here (at ANY level).

Decibels don't affect pollution that Euro 4 standards address.

If you want to blame old vehicles (the OP refers to new ones) then you have to include your "emissions-free" motorcycles in that also!  By the way, there are regulations for trucks, and buses.

That would be Euro 4, and Thailand complies with that standard already for diesels.

Every morning I hear one guy going to work and I reckon he has a BS 4 exhaust fitted.

Back Street 4 shops down.

Most motorcycles are already Euro 4 as the mandatory compliance in the EU that went into effect in 2016.

 

2020 will also see the effect of Euro 5 being mandatory for motorcycles sold in Europe. And since a lot of motorcycles assembled in Thailand are exported to Europe, most motorcycles sold in Thailand will also be Euro 5 already, apart from Thailand/Asia exclusive models that aren't exported.

Most is farmers burning their fields. Just look out the window. Of course, the ultimate Satan is always an owner of private transport, so proper bashing is in order. Has been for a couple of decades now.

everyone with a pm2.5 meter please put them behind your scooters and then your cars and then diesel pickups and such..

It's the diesels!!!

Any bike of the last 30yrs regardless of exhaust mods creates very little pollutants unless severely out of tune, bad valves, combusting leaking oil and so on...

2strokes are pretty bad though.

This is more idiot bs this story....

I have race bikes that dont polute with straight through pipes and the only bike i do have that polutes is a 2017 2stroke trials bike.

Mass produced motorcycles made in Japan , Europe and the U S are already engineered to the higher standards of those countries they are sold in which are a higher level than Thailand anyway ( UK is now Euro 6 ) .. The only mass produced machines that may not conform are likely to be Chinese ..

CO2 output is expressed as grms per km produced and usually to achieve any form of reduction by regulation tightening will produce minimal results especially in small engines like the majority of bikes have ..

They would be far better directing efforts at 4+ wheeled vehicles both petrol and especially diesel as they are the ones that produce noticeably more pollution than 2 wheels ..

Enforcment of any standards to any vehicle already in the hands of a thai ,is a dream in this nation...

This is one of the many reasons the USA pulled out of the climate accords.  The "developing nations" were allowed to pollute all they wanted in this way and others without penalty while developed nations paid the bill.  As if these developing nations didn't have access to all the technology and know how to reduce their pollution.  Just one reason by the way.

I find it laughable that you will quibble semantics about motorcycles and then boldly proclaim there are "regulations for trucks and buses", as if this actually meant something. Drive anywhere in Thailand at any time and you will see just how well these 'regulations' are enforced.

What utter utter nonsense. The US pulled out of the Paris agreement for two simple reasons, Trump doesn't understand it and Trump wants to dismantle anything done under the administration of President Obama. As far as the 'technology to reduce pollution, yes, it was available to poor developing countries as long as they paid large amounts to rich developed countries. On top of that developed nations (like the US) are still some of the largest polluters in the world, so that kinda destroys your whole argument right there.

the tech is available to any nation free thru many souces, not really complicated.  The only thing I agree with is that the great Trump wants to dismantle anything done by Obama.   Why would ending the burning of farm waste and the jungle for planting of rubber trees, palm oil trees, etc and the control of vehicle pollution cost them any more?

Whats next? Do they need lights as well?
