  • yes, I have a yellow book but they told me I had to have a residencey certificate, supposed to be free but I was charged 500 baht with no receipt, maybe it is a con worked out between the 2 department

  • Thank you.  No logic to that of course, but when has that ever mattered.

Had a friend here whose DL was due for renewal about 2 months ago. He was told by the local DLT that his yellow book was not acceptable as proof of address, and as he was a farang he had to go to DLT

Immigration will issue one for free, at least at Chang Wattana.

Immigration charges 500 baht at Nakhon Sawan.  It seems the charges are up to the local staff.

Yes; my wife read somewhere that it is up to the local office. Apparently, Chang Wattana makes enough with all their other fees.

They expire on your birthday...renew the day after you get 6 years all but one day

Do you need 2 RCs, for both car and motorbike licences, or just the one? I never know with this lot.  Sometimes one, plus a photo copy is enough, but not on every occasion.

At Pattaya they were quite happy to renew both licences together based on a single residence letter and a copy. Although the lady at immigration tried to get me to buy 2 of them.

Do you live on Samui? Heard from a friend corruption is awful over there. In Chiang Mai the situation is much better now compared to a few years ago.

Same at Khon Kaen Immigration - residency certificate issued free. Remember, FIRST go to your local DLT office and get letter from them requesting a proof of residency certificate. Once in possession of this, return to your DLT for your driving licence renewal.

that's an easy one to answer. If you wait until after the expiry date ( which usually coincides with your birthday, once you've done your first 5 year renewal, then if you look at the expiry date you will notice that it is your birth date. What they do is calculate 5 years from the renewal/expiry date and then make the new expiry date your birth date after the 5 year calculation, hence 6 years instead of 5. e.g  my expiry date was Jan 2018. I went in for my first 5 year renewal, the day after the expiry date, 5 years from Jan 2018 is Jan 2023, but as my birthday is in July the expiry date on my license is July 2023, so I got 5 1/2 years.  When I go to do my renewal in 2023, provided they system does not change, I will go to DLT 1 or 2 days after the expiry date ( my birth date ) and the renewed 5 year license should have an expiry date of July 2029. So that's how you get more than 5 years on a 5 year license.
