webfact
Flights up/leave cancelled up as Thai immigration prepares big festive season welcome Picture: Naew Na Naew Na reported that the Immigration Bureau were busy preparing for a huge influx of tourists at Bangkok's main airport yesterday. During the busy run up to Christmas and New Year period flights are up and 160,000 people are expected at Suvarnabhumi airport alone. The media said that this year in the period from the 15th of December to the 31st there will be 14,530 flights. This compares to just 13,860 in the same period last year. However, Thaivisa notes that the media made no attempt to estimate if more flights actually meant more tourists. In a positive report they quoted immigration spokesman Pol Col Cherngron Rimphadee as saying that the bureau were trying to strike a balance between making sure that criminal elements were kept out and aiding the convenience of the travelling public. The bureau have instigated a master plan to cope with the festive period encompassing five airports - Suvarnabhumi and Don Muang in Bangkok, Phuket, Chiang Mai and Hat Yai - that runs from the 20th of this month until the 6th of January. Picture: Naew Na The spokesman said that Maj Gen Weeraphon Charoensiri was acting in accordance with policies put into practice by the RTP chief Gen Chakthip Chaijinda and immigration commander Lt-gen Sompong Chingduang. He promised packed booths and leave would be cancelled for immigration officers at the airports that were the "Gateways to Thailand". Even so there may be some bottlenecks at peak periods and it might sometimes take an hour to get through immigration, he cautioned. Despite the big presence at the booths the travelling public has been told to arrive at Suvarnabhumi three hours before departure, check that passports have validity of 6 months and make sure they fill in immigration cards correctly. Doing this will help the bureau keep things moving fast, he said. Not as if this has not happened every year before, so making a BIG statement ... Leave cancelled is BS.

legend49
However, Thaivisa notes that the media made no attempt to estimate if more flights actually meant more tourists. It hits the nail on the head, many flights are transiting to other countries.

Most airports revolve around services/outlets working a multi-shift system which means leave as such is not necessary, people work when they're required to cover a shift. Pay is adjusted to compensate working on a national holiday or leave is granted in lieu later in the quieter moments.
Thechook
So another huge increase in tourism. Nothing on earth can effect numbers and if Prayuth and men didn't ban fake news I would've called rubbish.

RJRS1301
Oh another message regrading arrivals, gee they cannot have one consistent narrative on this subject. Does each officer have their own communications "expert" to issue a message different from their colleagues? These people make themselves look like prats of the first order
lamyai3
Wonder if they're opening extra detention rooms for those arbitrarily denied entry in spite of holding valid visas?
overherebc
15 days 14,500 flights means 960 flights a day or is that 480 landings and 480 take-offs? Am I reading it the right way? Over all airports I hope.

Short stop BKK where 90% of pax ended their journey and the 10% went on to Sing' on the same plane. I used it a lot as they sold cheap returns BKK/Sing' just to get bums on seats. Now the system seems to be affiliated airlines for last short hops.
observer90210
Increase in passenger arrival numbers ? Ok Maybe....but at the end of the day, is there an increase of ca$H in the registers and the pockets of the local merchants ? One could highly doubt it with the ripOff prices in the malls, the soapys, the clubs in Thailand.....prices that are sometimes similar, if not more, then in Europe !!!!!!...yesSir.....
