Gov’t says it is ready to tackle decline in tourists at Angkor

Tourist arrivals at the world-famous Angkor Archaeological Park in Cambodia’s Siem Reap saw a 15 percent decrease last year, but the government said it has mapped out a plan to address the problem.

 

Angkor Enterprise’s latest report, announced this week, shows that about 2.2 million foreign tourists bought passes to the temple complex in 2019, a 15 percent decline over the same period in 2018. It noted income from ticket sales reached $99 million.

 

Angkor Enterprise – a public administration, which is under the technical supervision of the Ministry of Tourism and under the financial supervision of the Ministry of Economy and Finance – sold entrance passes to 2.5 million foreign tourists, earning $116 million in 2018. Top Sopheak, spokesperson at Tourism Ministry, said the Ministry has worked with relevant authorities and reached a solution.

Perhaps the 20 million people who had a desire to see Angkor have seen it. Young people dont always share the desire to see ruins. Everything is not infinite.

Yep. Throw in the massive ticket price increase from $20 to $37US for a day pass and watch the numbers fall.

I think with Anghor, the increase to almost $40 put the brakes on visitors...most of the ex Thai residents havnt relocated to see a wat anyway

Too expensive that's why. At $37 it is more expensive than most tourist attractions  in the western world.

Actually the article says the 2019 figure is 6.6m up from 6.2m in 2018. An increase but only 6% and the extras probably only went to Sihanoukville. Almost believeable figures...

The should be happy, not long ago we read in the news that Angkor Wat was ruined by too many tourists, seems like problem is beginning to get solved...????
