BANGKOK (NNT) - People are aware of a campaign against the use of plastic bags and are increasingly using cloth bags for shopping. Natural Resources and Environment Minister Varawut Silpa-archa said he was heartened by online criticisms of obscured images of plastic bags on TV because he said it has raised public awareness.

Mr. Varawut said the removal of images of plastic bags was a measure of cooperation and it depends on individual TV channel whether to do so. He added that the blurring will draw criticism, which helps raise the awareness among the Thais that January 1 was the first day of the campaign against the use of plastic bags and that Thailand has already begun to reduce their use.

At convenience and department stores in the capital district of Khon Kaen province, people were found carrying cloth bags while shopping. Those convenience stores are no longer providing plastic bags and display signs saying so. For those who may not have brought cloth bags with them, the stores have offered recyclable bags for three baht each. They can be returned and changed to new ones for free at the stores where they were purchased.

At a grocery store in Phuket province, most customers brought cloth bags with them. For those who may not have brought cloth bags of their own, the store offers cloth bags either as an item for sale or a giveaway.

Wonder if this will start applying to all the water bottles and other plastic tat that is advertised next to every news reader or talent show panel guest

Meanwhile, exports drop, foreign investment is fleeing the country, the overpriced baht is scaring away tourists, unemployment is going up, prices are rising . . . BUT. . . they've got that plastic bag thing in their sights.

The plastic bags and straws are only step #1.......Next plastic cups and plastic utensils.....Then plastic bottles and the small plastic bags the street sellers use....Then ?? Maybe no more plastic teeth fillings back to mercury fillings...lol.....

My Tesco Lotus delivery today (marked no bags) only resulted in 9 plastic bags.  But they were all the "alternate item" green color (making it almost impossible to find what had been substituted - they write this only in Thai on bill for last several years) and the bags were marked to reuse.  As they seem to always use motorcycle to deliver these days not sure how they can avoid some kind of bag use.

It's a shame they don't edit out the man-on-woman beatings, rapes and - bizarrely - whippings that infest Thai soaps if they want to alter public perceptions in a positive way.

I used the plastic bags in the kitchen for scraps and elsewhere for trash. These would easily be transferred in the large garbage bins supplied by the condo management. Fruit and vegetable waste doesn't keep well in a paper bag, and makes a foul mess when you dump it into the bin. Solutions?

Solution for Mac98...a little common sense goes a long way. Bin bags, a waste disposal system, dogs, rats, ants, will all help.

Generally, as can be seen, I am in favour of this so called ban and am getting a little browned off by all the negative and stupid comments here, by so called intelligent westerners who continually criticise the Thais.

Yes, bin bags! Big plastic bags so I don't use small plastic bags. Brilliant! And you like supporting two or three plumbers coming out to clear your pipes from all the garbage you dumped into the "disposal" system.
