Thailand’s Pollution Control Department (PCD) has scheduled a meeting with related agencies this afternoon (Monday) to discuss the air quality in Bangkok and its suburbs as the amount of PM2.5 particulate exceeded standard levels in 15 areas this morning.

The department’s director-general, Mr. Pralong Damrongthai, said that the meeting will discuss additional measures to address the air quality problem, adding that that air quality in the city and its surrounding areas usually worsens in the afternoon, because the level of PM2.5 dust particles tends to increase, and that the cold weather, the looming high pressure and light winds are combining to reduce the air quality from today until Wednesday.

The Meteorological Department predicts strong winds on Thursday, which will help disperse PM2.5 dust particles to higher altitudes, improving ground level air quality.

pm was 220 this morning at my house in kanchanaburi. Averaging 170 i guess most mornings. Don't open the house until about 1pm when it drops to about 60-70.

There is a lot of people here so why is Bkk so dam important? Im part of a local group that is trying to stop this stupid burning but there is absolutely no hope. The governent dont care at all about thai peoples health. I used to think it was to make it easier for the farmers but im coming to realize they simply dont care about anyone in rural areas, end of story. Its blatent murder if you ask me and self defense seems the only option. There is no reason for burning at all. IM A FARMER!! We dont do it!!

All the local hills are on fire and i got a picture from a cctv camera today of a guy thats came from the hills with a backpack on and not someone i see pass so could be a fire bug i guess. No other reason to be out there this time of year and unable to breath.

You got it one...stop the stupid burning and most of the problem is already solved..no need ( secondary importance)

for electric vehicles and no plastic bags at 7/11  just stop the burning !!!

They know what the problem is, but won't address it.

If I go for a drive at 6pm at night, any direction, you can see people already burning their land, smoke, smoke, smoke and in the morning you stick your detector out the window and the PM2.5 reading is 65ug/m3 an unhealthy reading and we have to wait till at least 10.00am to open the place up, and get this, burning season hasn't really started yet, although I have to admit, have been enjoying the fresh air post New Year up to yesterday.

God help us because these meetings are an annual event to just show that they are doing something, in fact nothing, nice lunch then it's back to the office for the next year.

Only solution is to carpet bomb the villages where the farmers burn their fields. Otherwise it's maibpenrai.

Yes, let's definitely have ANOTHER meeting... And another one after that. And another one after that... until all involved forget what they were meeting about... then time to leave BKK on vacation leave until the air quality eventually improves after a few months....

I live in Kanchanaburi too and these past 2 or 3 years have been the worst ever in my 18 years here.

You hit the nail right on the head, nobody with the power to solve the problem gives a <deleted>.

"The Meteorological Department predicts strong winds on Thursday, which will help disperse PM2.5 dust particles to higher altitudes, improving ground level air quality." So they do not realise that what goes up must come down! We had the professor advising the PCD speak at our club and she would not blame the problem on any farmers burning fields, the street stalls with their fried chilli tear gas fry ups and the people still cooking on charcoal fires. I still do not expect any action to stop the farmers burning their fields as it is a political no no.
