Australian's Bangkok ICU care costs $50,000 a week

Featured Replies

An Australian man is in a coma in a Bangkok intensive care unit following an accident in Thailand, with his family saying his medical bills have already exceeded $135,000.

Sydney model and Copini Beauty co-founder Casey James said her father had undergone multiple emergency brain operations and had spent 10 days in the ICU as of Sunday, 23 August.

James, 28, said she received a call from Australia's Department of Foreign Affairs telling her that her father had been involved in an accident and was in a Bangkok ICU.

"Within two hours, my husband and I were on a flight to Thailand," she wrote on Instagram.

She gave not further details of the accident, but did state that her father had previously survived a serious motorcycle crash in March 2025, pulling through, after the hospital had described his injuries as life threatening.

Family faces uncertain wait in Bangkok

James said the extent of her father's future needs was not yet known, but described him as "one hell of a fighter".

"My dad has been in a coma for ten days and counting. What his future looks like is unknown," she wrote.

She added that her mother's 57th birthday fell on the day of her post, saying she was sitting in the ICU while remembering her mother, who had died from cancer.

James urged others to hold loved ones close, saying life could change "in a blink of an eye".

ICU and medical evacuation costs mount

A GoFundMe appeal started by James's cousin, Bridgette Pereira, is seeking $250,000 to help cover the man's treatment. It had received well over $36,000 in donations by Sunday.

In a note on the fundraising page, James said more than $135,000 had already been incurred for emergency brain surgery and continuing ICU care.

IMG_1025.jpeg

"The cost of keeping Dad in the ICU is approximately $50,000 per week, and the cost of transporting him safely home to Australia is expected to be around $500,000," she wrote.

Those sums do not include long-term care and rehabilitation expected after he returns to Australia. James said the family had been told he was likely to need ongoing medical support, potentially for life.

A warning over medical cover in Thailand

The case underlines the potentially substantial cost of emergency private hospital treatment and medical evacuation for foreign visitors and residents in Thailand. James has not stated whether her father held travel or health insurance.

Foreigners arranging travel insurance should check the policy's cover for emergency treatment, intensive care, pre-existing conditions and repatriation, as medical evacuation can involve specialist staff and equipment.

In Thailand the same doctors and surgeons work in both public and private hospitals. My 4 hour surgery for a broken leg in Chiang Mai 3 years ago was just 130,000 thb ..had I gone to the private hospital that the same surgeon would have done the procedure and it would have cost over $600,000! Same doc but in a more pleasant atmosphere.

It seems to me that most foreigners who are in an accident are sent to private hospitals when they are unconscious or have no say. Maybe wrong, but I don’t know why now she doesn’t move him to a public hospital if they can’t afford a private hospital. Also it doesn’t sound like he had insurance. Which you’d think he would have especially after a bad accident a year ago. I guess he didn’t learn much from that. It’s sad, but the bills could have been prevented.

I wish for the man to pull thru for a full recovery. But it seems likely, my guess is he wasn't wearing a helmet, again. Sadly, he already skimmed by a close call and probably feeling brave and thinking, nah, I don't need a helmet is my guess. I believe that most riders that don't wear a helmet will not change their mind after reading this unless you were close to the person.

If a Thai national had an accident in Australia, he or she would receive complete medical assistance, including ICU care in any hospital that was the closest at the time,in situations like this we all help each other and worry about the cost later. I know Thailand has wonderful health care the same as Australia so let's get on with it shall we and most of all we prey your Dad pulls through ok

I hope this guy somehow makes it but when you are in a position where you've had multiple brain operations, that's never a particularly good sign.

$36,000 in donations thus far is substantial, there's hope. One wonders the usual things - did insurance refuse to cover him? Two accidents in one year, drinking? Seems like no helmet. Hope everything works out.

Years ago, when my father was seriously ill, iI was really distressed. It was hard to just continue functioning at work and do the daily chores.

These days, when your love ones are dying, you put their suffering in a clip on your youtube channel, get the latest brain scan and spread it over the WWW and contact as many newspapers as cou can.

And then of course haul up some serious dosh, don't think small, start with 6 digit numbers. So between the increased clicks, the likes, the increased branding of her beauty product line (what was the name again?) and the money coming in she probably hopes that dad is making it this time again (apparently his is second near fatal accident within a couple of years) and on we go.

Disgusting but seems to work.

No Insurance, drunk, no licence, no Helmet, drugs in system maybe? (a total loser if he did not learn from 2025 accident... a deadbeat)

I was going to donate 5 thb to this loser, but have decided to keep my 5 thb.

The guy's famliy can take out 2nd or 3rd mortgages for him if they love him so much.

A better idea though: cancel the GoFundMe, turn off the machines he is on at hospital, let him pass away, hire a tuk tuk for 300 thb and dump him outside a Temple... they will then look after him and burn him.. (end of story)

Again, what a total loser!!!!!!! A lot of GoFundMe's are for patient's family to help them pay off their own mortgages. They 'use' relative's conditions for their own selfish purposes.

There are reciprocal arrangements between countries. I had a procedure for a dislocated shoulder in Italy. When I went to pay they told me that if I had an Australian medicare card the service would have been free.

Got your $$ and bht wrong there kamper Ken or your full of BS!

described him as "one hell of a fighter"

I agree.

He was a bit scrappy after being told riding a motorcycle in Thailand wasn't safe and has a 10% chance of dying in the street every single time he rides.

Told me to toss off. 😮

You forgot to mention: insurance does not cover stupid behavior, which is the cause for many/most accidents foreigners have.

Hardman Damo, or is that ddddDamien!

I'm sure that the first thing the ambulances do with a farang in an accident is take them to the International hospitals, the charges are getting obscene, They are obviously not embarrassed about their charges, Seriously,

Only yesterday me and the wife went to Hompro in Chalong, we intended to look at the children's play area on the first floor, anyway the escalators were not working so that was me I had to wait on the ground floor while my wife walked up, we have grand children coming this week,

I was waiting on the ground floor and I was using my walker, I was using it to sit down, This Thai woman standing nearby looking at me, I thought she was looking at my walker as many people do, then she said I reminded her of her husband, Does he have a walker like this?, she said yes but he died 3 weeks ago, So I then get the whole story about her husband, He had been in a hospital here in Phuket, it was costing the husbands family 100,000 Baht Per day, jing jing, What could possibly cost 100k a day? his symptoms were similar to mine, his were worse than me, but never 100k per day, Bye the way he spent 2 months in hospital, She tells me. This is in Phuket.

I can’t understand a situation where someone can afford to travel overseas but cannot/ does not get the proper insurance..sure in cases of special circumstances (which i cant think of atm) perhaps a money raise otherwise get the proper insurance cover and don’t be a fool!

This is chump change compared to the cost in the USA. That AUD 50,000 wouldn't even cover a day.

A warning over medical cover in Thailand

Whatever happened to the medical tourism being pushed about 15 years ago. Looks like the medical price hike as taken care of that.

Yes I did. Typo. Thb.

I suspect he was unconscious and didn't make that choice.

If you're unconscious after a bad accident, do you figure the ambulance is going to take you to a private hospital, or a government hospital, given that I think they are generally funded by finder's fees from the hospital?

Edited by impulse

I hope it's not a similar case, but last month a countryman, without health insurance, without a helmet and with a lot of alcohol was on the GoFundMe list.

Hardman Damo, or is that ddddDamien!

The evil Dami'e'n haha

a bit of a over simplified unhelpful post, ie a temple would not just burn a body dumped outside.

we need the details of the accident, as he has previous for m/c accident, its fair to assume the same here, there are too many unqualified, helmetless, drunk people driving m/c in Thailand

I suspect he meant to say 600k baht not dollars.

I'd like to know more about the accident, especially if not his fault.
