Transport department to crack down on ‘illegal modification’ of vehicle lights

The Department of Land Transport has said it is taking seriously complaints by road users of inconvenience caused by certain vehicle-users modifying their headlights.

 

The department’s director-general, Chanthira Burutpat, said this week that her department had received several complaints from road users about their vision being disturbed by vehicles that had modified their headlights/tail lights and/or had installed additional lamps to produce brighter beams.

 

“There are also reported cases of vehicle users modifying their lights into different colours other than those specified by the law, which are all illegal,” she added.

 

“The Department of Land Transport worries about the safety of all road users and would like to ask vehicle owners to refrain from modifying their lights, which could affect the vision of other road users and eventually cause accidents.”

 

Chanthira said that she also has ordered DLT’s provincial branches as well as private car inspection centres to strictly follow the DLT regulations on vehicle lights. “Any vehicles that don’t comply with the regulations will be considered as failing the inspection until the owners fix the issues,” she said.

 

“We have also collaborated with the police by dispatching inspection staff to police checkpoints nationwide to perform random checks,” she said. “Vehicles that violate the regulations will be issued tickets immediately.”

 

According to Chanthira, the DLT’s regulations specify that all vehicles must install a maximum of two front lamps providing lower angle beams, and a maximum of two front lamps providing far-reaching beams. The lamp lights must be white or light yellow and installed at the same level both left and right, at least 40cm above the road level but not exceeding 135cm.

 

Indicator lights must be bright yellow and capable of blinking; they must be installed in pairs at the front and 2-4 lights at the back. Brake lights must be red and not blinking, installed in pairs or 4 lights at the back. The light illuminating the licence plate must be white and must help make the plate readable in the dark.

I may be wrong, but I remember they clamping down of this 12 years back.  These clamp downs sue to seem to work well.

Clamping down on "no lights at all" may be a more useful, safety-oriented effort.

Blinking hell 

Women with big headlights are very dangerous.

At least no one has started modifying their turning lights to red. Back home that's what kills me the most. Can't see <deleted> when someone finally uses their flashers.

 

In Canada and the US, the rear signals may be amber or red.

 

 

Cute, the police wants to clamp down. Like they clamped down on people riding without seat-belt on pickup trucks or will the clampdown be as severe as the burning ban? Those vehicle owners must be so scared and all change their modifications now.

 

Why do authorities always want to lose face when making these funny statements...

oh sure they will, and also clamp down on the blurring of their license plate numbers so cameras can't capture a readable one.  I see new and 2 to 3 yr. old cars with unreadable rear plates due to ????  

Target the shops as well

I hope they deal with those that put black lenses on the rear lights,not a clever idea.

the amount of trucks that light up like mobile discos on the roads is way overboard and all the light sellers that are on the road side flogging these  as well, cant drive on roads of a night without seeing flashing coloured lights on virtually every truck, maybe they could get the truck drivers to actually make sure their tail lights are visible for more than one metre

The impotence of those "entrusted" to enforce such laws will result in yet another crackdown to be ignored and forgotten.

And there are Thousands of Cars with no rear License plate at all.

Somehow they have all fallen off, which makes it almost impossible for a Speeding Camera to photograph it.

Poor Maintenance

Red, non-blinking rear lights are standard on all vehicles.

The front plates are also photographed by speed cameras.

Not sure if they all do, I got a speeding tix between here and CM and it was the front plate, maybe others get the rear plate, don't want to find out personally!!

 

Rear plate photos may be at intersections for red light runners.

Modified or none at all.... good luck with that one.

Went for car inspection, tax, mandatory insurance this week. First time I remember that they checked the headlights with a machine.

This is the 2nd or 3rd crackdown on this that I can remember. It will work just as well as the others.

all my speed camera tickets (hundreds of them) have been from the front, where I know the camera is I give a wave whilst I go past it.

more like - to catch speeding Mbikes (rear plates), riding the wrong way 

I would have thought flashing red brake lights would be better as something changing is more visible than something static.

Yet again they get the priorities ass about face.

 

Helmets?

No more than two on a motorbike?

Jumping red lights?

Riding motorbikes on pedestrian pavements?

Speeding and reckless driving?

Illigal and thoughtless parking?

Drink driving?

Proper diving tests?

People sat or standing on the flat bed of pickup trucks?

Proper school buses plus in town buses? Not pickups!

Road management?

Over crowed passenger vehicles?

Proper vehicle testing?

Pollution from clapped out vehicles?

Where do I stop????

 

On second thoughts, a crack down on lights is far more important.
