Nancy Pelosi poised to send Trump impeachment charges to U.S. Senate for trial

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The Democratic-led U.S. House of Representatives is expected to formally send impeachment charges against President Donald Trump to the Senate this week, where Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has vowed to help acquit his fellow Republican.

Rather than immediately sending the two articles of impeachment passed by the House on Dec. 18 to the Republican-led Senate, Democratic House Speaker Nancy Pelosi held on to them, preventing McConnell from dispensing with the matter with a quick trial that cleared the president. The House charged Trump with abuse of power and obstruction of Congress in its investigation of his dealings with Ukraine.

House Democrats will discuss on Tuesday morning how to move forward, Pelosi said on Sunday, with the chamber possibly voting to send the charges to the Senate later that day.

The nearly month-long delay in sending over the charges, according to Pelosi, accomplished the goal of getting the U.S. public to see the need for calling witnesses in the trial after Trump's administration blocked some current and former officials from cooperating in the House impeachment inquiry.

Trump appeared on Sunday to reverse his position on how the Senate should proceed. Trump wrote on Twitter on Sunday that a full trial would give the Democrats who pursued impeachment undeserved credibility, and signalled support for having the Senate simply dismiss the charges with no trial.

McConnell has yet to say definitively how the Senate will conduct the trial.

He has not committed to allowing any witnesses or new documents in the proceedings and instead could steer the process towards a quick acquittal. McConnell has left open the possibility of deciding on witness testimony later in the trial. He has said he sees no chance of the Senate convicting Trump.

The impeachment charges stem from Trump's request that Ukraine investigate former Vice President Joe Biden, a leading contender for the Democratic nomination to face Trump in the Nov. 3 presidential election.

The Senate, which could open a trial rapidly after receiving the charges from the House, plans to meet daily except on Sundays each week to conduct the proceedings, likely beginning each day at noon ET (1700 GMT) and working until either 5 p.m. or 6 p.m. ET (2200 or 2300 GMT), according to congressional aides.

The Senate is expected to vote to acquit Trump even though some moderate Republicans have bristled over McConnell's reflexive support for the president.

Unfortunately for "most voters" ( though it's only based on a poll which does not include "all voters" ) they don't run the senate.

C'mon Nancy, this isn't a tv reality show, so quit the faux suspense <deleted> and either deliver them, or call the whole thing off. Unless something really unexpected happens, the senate isn't going to convict, so it's all just political theater that the taxpayer is paying large for.

Nancy has her knickers in a knot when it comes to anything to do with president Trump,

her pursuit of an individual like this an  obsession would be classed as stalking  against a  normal person.

Another theory is she delayed it to keep Bernie and Warren holed up in the senate there by harming their chances in Iowa. We know the DFL hates Bernie and sabotaged him last time around. Even Obama said he would get involved if it looked like Bernie would get the nod.

As I started the post with the words "theory" I am not going to debate it and no you aren't entitled to a link.

Troll post removed.

Not to mention protecting us from people on full blown melt down like Pelosi. There is on pretense of the impartiality she claims to defend in her demeanor and actions at this point.

She is about as vehement and bitter as some of the posts that follow this will be.

60,000 fans on their feet giving the commander in chief a standing ovation and all chanting USA at the championship tonight.

Democrats, like a petulant child, continue this farcical attack on democracy.   Now entering the end game where the processes allow it to be consigned to history where it belongs.   Trumps impeachment will be remembered only as a footnote to the real story, being the gross abuse of power and process by the Democrats.

It's either brilliant or a complete blunder. Time will tell. If Trump wins in 2020 we will know for sure.

Notice you said ‘their backyard’ and thats the point. Countries a lot closer than the US had an agreement that was working. The US pulled out and Iran accelerated production. So yes the US should help.

If the US is directly attacked it will also ask for help as it has always done.

Like his predecessor?

Who brought danger to the world on a grand scale and paid the crazy ayatollahs huge amounts of cash to further their goals.

And of course, it is money that governs the world, not the people.

It has always been so, and will always be so, the only influence of the people, anywhere in the world, is purely cosmetic.

Blaming the current president is rather stupid, he is just a sideshow for the big money.

Like those who went before him.

Lol. Her timing was horrible and I’m sure she at just shy of her 80th birthday regrets this now. There will be no “war”, the ones who she thought ( probably hoped ) to war with are staging protests against their own government and leader in Iran!! Even CNN had to report it. Now the first huge step on the China deal will take place with signatures tomorrow! The stock market is going higher and higher! Iowa is 20 days away and New Hampshire a week later. There is no strong, well liked Dem in the bunch still!  This whole plan of hers really seemed to bomb. Everyone knows the outcome as well. Waste of time Nancy.

The only thing happening tomorrow is more promising by China, and some reversal of already established tariffs ????

Oh so nothing is getting signed tomorrow? The stock market won’t go up again, and the next part of the China deal won’t start to progress??

China says and does what it wants.  Let’s see the details, which there are none now.  It is only reducing some tariffs that are in place, and in that is not really progress because Americans are still going to be footing the bill.  He caved on new tariffs, which would have really affected China.  It’s another Trump show-let’s see the facts when they come out.  The only thing he has succeeded on was the new NAFTA, and he just copied the Obama teams drafting ????

He should have gotten the us allies involved, but he’s not that smart.

Looks like the votes are there to curb.
